I adopted 2 kittens from a shelter last week they are 11 weeks old. They seem to be very healthy active kittens. However, yesterday I noticed goopy eyes with both of them. They are eating and drinking fine. Should I take them to the vet? I haven't had kittens in 20 years so I am very unsure of what to do. I had plans to take them in in the next week or 2 for their booster shots so I haven't established with a vet yet.

Thanks,

Shannon

I've rescued and re-homed quite a lot of kittens in the past few years and eye infections seem to be quite common. It could be signs of a cold, in which case they'll need some medicine to treat it.

Conjunctivitis is also common and it's very contagious. It can be treated quite easily with eye drops, but it's best to treat it as soon as possible because it can cause more serious problems if left untreated for too long.

Either way, I'd recommend a trip to the vet to get this cleared up before they have their booster shots. If they're on medication for something such as a cold they might not be able to have their shots, in case the two medicines cause problems when used at the same time.

Good luck.

I agree with Nora-chans advices and remarks.

Goopy eyes arent nothing to fool with, unless you know perfectly well what you are doing, or are really desperate.

Good luck!

The vet will test for scratches and will probably prescribe antibiotic ointment. our smallest kitten had this and it quickly cleared right up. :rbheart:
