I have a friend who just put profender (topical broad spectrum de-wormer) on his three adult cats, because they have tapeworm, from fleas.

Of course he wants to treat them for fleas now too, and wanted to know if it was okay to apply the frontline/frontline plus (not sure which) after applying the profender. I didn't know the answer, so I hoped someone here would.

Thanks

I just googled it and Dr. Dym (what a name for a doctor, eh) says that it should by OK, but seems like a case of overkill. Dr. Christian says wait a week or so, to avoid skin irritation. So

Thanks. It wouldn't be overkill, why would a vet say that? They are two different products targeting two different things. Profender is a broad spectrum de-wormer, and Frontline Plus protects against fleas.

I did find something at petmeds.com when I googled, the staff vet answered a similar question saying to wait a week between the two, also. Guess that's the thing to do then.

Profender is a transdermal, whereas Frontline is a topical correct? If so, then I'd wait. If Frontline works better as a topical then that's what I'd want. Not to mention the risk of burns. I'm not a vet but that's my 2 cents.

The are both spot-ons, liquid applied to the back of the neck, so I think they would both be called topical.

One is a de-wormer only. One is a flea control (and tick, if frontline plus) only.

Since the cats have tapeworm from fleas, I would have thought droncit (oral tablet) would have been more appropriate than profender. I don't like my friend's vet much I don't think, based on this and another issue also involving unnecessary procedures.

I checked, and Profender is picked up quickly by the bloodstream. I don't know why they are calling it a topical, but you're right that they claim such. Considering how Frontline works, which is by coating the fur, I'd wait before applying.

Not knowing anything about your friend's vet, I think the vet is trying to treat this thoroughly. However, more thorough instructions would have been nice!

So profender is absorbed systemically, like Revolution, (which protects against fleas, ear mites, roundworm and hookworm). okay.

They were told they couldn't bring the cat in (for an ear infection) unless they agreed to a full set of vaccinations (on a cat with an ear infection, no less). The only vaccine required by law in my friend's state is rabies, but the poor indoor cat went home not only doused with profender but loaded up with rabies (the three year adjuvant containing) FVRCP and feline leukemia. Grrrrrrrr.

This is a shelter cat who was fully vaccinated when they adopted him, less than three years ago.

I can understand the vet trying to protect ALL clients' kitties by ensuring vaccinations, but I also agree that there is a point in which you gotta say enough. I was a stickler about it with my old diabetic with CRF (bad numbers) with a thymoma that took up half of her chest cavity. My vet at that time thankfully understood my position on why I violated the rabies law and my old girl wasn't vaccinated. My new ones are, and I'm embarrassed to say with the 3 year Rabies vax. I just didn't ask. But hey, what's done is done, and he's a fan of raw diet and other ideas I have.
