No they wont go away on their own. You can treat fleas at home with original dawn soap and a flea/lice comb or you could bring him to the vet to see if he is old enough for advantage or revolution and get a dose of that.
Oh ok. On that whole biting thing, since imitating a cat doesn't really work. Would blowing on his face work?

Yeah he's definitely got fleas. I seen one crawling through on is neck while he was sleeping. I'm not gonna take him to a vet, I've seen they got some flea/tick stuff at the Dollar Store. I've read this, http://www.catsofaustralia.com/kitten_fleas.htm. The only thing with those instruction, giving him a bath and picking the fleas off, he has really really long hair so it would be hard to find all the fleas!

Please do not use the over the counter flea medication from the dollar store it is just as dangerous as flea collars. Here is a whole website dedicated to animals that have died or gotten very ill from hartz which is the most popular OTC treatment  (http://www.hartzvictims.org). The instructions on the site you found are good and the only safe at home treatment is dawn and a flea comb. The only safe spot treatments are Advantage, Frontline or Revolution.

You will have to take the kitten to get his vaccines anyway at the vet soon, so one dose of a flea treatment should not be very expensive. Actually I have heard sometimes it is included in the first check up. I would call around to the vets in your town and see what the prices are, because you are in the Southern US I bet the prices are a lot less than you think.

I didn't plan on using an offbrand but I figured they might have the ones you mentioned. Are those flea treatments over the counter or can only a Vet give them to me?

Has he been wormed yet? If he rubs his butt on the floor it can a sign of itching or discomfort caused by worms. And all kittens have them. But please do not use any wormer not given you by a vet or at least a qualified pharmacist - some wormers can be very dangerous.

No he hasn't. Everything you suggest requires a vet and I've had pets before and haven't ever brought them to a vet. I really don't think  I need to bring him to a vet for every little thing. I think it'll be safe to give him some wormer from a store or wherever they sell it. He doesn't do it all the time anyways. It's just sometimes he has a "sausage" hanging out. I still plan on getting wormer and some flea stuff that was suggested. I'm gonna avoid a vet for a while.

Some of the OverTheCount stuff IS directly dangerous.  That is why we do warn.  Thrue, there ARE recipe free preparates who are OK, but you must know which are OK, and which arent. So for example, preparates  with Pyrantel as the active part, should be OK as dewormer for roundworms.

I know there are such.   One of our problems is,  we dont know what is accessible at your town,

only you can know, by going to the shelf, look, see, google or return here and ask.

And yourself think over what to choose, what to do.   :)

Good luck!

I agree that not everything needs a vet, especially when you have some experience. But we have members here who have lost their cats due to being given wormers or flea treatments that were bought from petstores or supermarkets. Hartz is a company to beware of - never buy their products. I find that often I can get what I need at a pharmacy that sells animal medicines - talk to a friendly pharmacist and they are qualified to offer quite a range of products, though not of course medicines on the prescription list.

In Canada I think you can only get it at the vet but there seems to be a lot of websites in the states that sell it without a prescription. I found Frontline for cats and kittens for $24 for a three months supply and $58 for a 6 months supply(). If you google the different brand names you can shop around. It says on the package they need to be over 8 weeks.

Yeah, he's 7 weeks now. I tried using the dawn and bathing him but his hair is just too long to get those fleas. I got maybe 3. He sure is soft after the bath! So Frontline will be probably be the flea treatment I buy but anyone got a recommendation for wormers?

Wamart's website says this in stock at my local walmart, http://www.walmart.com/ip/PetArmor-...for-Cats-Kittens-3-month-Supply-Cats/19714748. I know it's a cheaper brand so you guys won't recommend it.

I have never heard of it sorry. It looks like it is sopposed to be a dupe of frontline so it might be fine. The three month frontline is only a few $ more on amazon so not really a big price difference.

If you find a prescription free preparate with Pyrantel as the active part, it should do fine for round worms.  I know there are some such, forumites did bought..   Pyrantel is OK also for kittens.

I saw even a tip to buy such one in big bottles for horses.

The trick there was to count just exactly how many milli-litres a cat should have, being much smaller than a horse.   :)

For someone having just one kitten it is of course waay too much, and too complicated,

but for a seasoned rescuer  or owner of many out going cats this is an useful tip, if the pocket is tight for money.

Ya I'll look when I go to walmart! I plan on getting that frontline for the fleas though.

So he just pooed and he didn't even let the sausage come out, he just jumped out and rubbed his ass on the floor. This is so gross and I don't know what to do with it anymore. I kept throwing him back in but he'd get out and rub his ass more.

I am wondering if he is constipated? You could try mixing in some canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) into his food, this may help.

I guess he is because I've been giving him different flavors of fancy feast but I don't remember which one wasn't making him poo like that, I think he may have been the chunky kind. I'm not sure but it's pretty sick
 lol.

It is probably better to just stick with the classic pate because the other flavours have additives and grains so that might be bothering his system.

Hi again, I just saw on another thread that someone mentioned Drontal is a good over the counter dewormer. They said the cat needed to be over 2 months and over 2 pounds to use it. Worms may be contributing to the pooping problem
