My lovely 17 year old cat Sootie has died today.  We just found him in the garden where he crept off to sleep.  He seemed fine yesterday, quite lively, eating OK and very cuddly as normal although I was worried at how thin he had become.  Your site has really helped us to understand why his eyes are wide open and it's good to know he probably died peacefully in his sleep.

We shall miss him so much.

Thank you for putting our minds at rest.

I'm so sorry. :( Take care of yourself.

It sounds like he died peacefully, and in a beautiful place. In a way, he's lucky. So many cats die after a long illness, where their bodies just refuse to give up. The eyes just open upon death; this happened to my kitty even though she was heavily sedated. It can be very distressing for us to see, but as you said, it doesn't mean they died in distress.

Some kitties just lose weight as they get old and their bodies don't process things quite as efficiently. If he seemed to be otherwise ok, I think it's ok to assume he probably was.

He obviously lived a long life full of love. Hopefully he was smelling flowers and dreaming of the bridge when he went.

Sending hugs and good vibes for you.

Thank you all for your very kind words.

It is very quiet here without a cat in the house; very strange as I have had one, two or three cat for about 35 years without a break.

Sootie was gorgeous.  A huge black cat with long fur and big green eyes.  He was completely unfazed by dogs and very friendly to everyone.  He used to follow us everywhere and greet the car when he heard it arrive.  It is very quiet without him.

Just thought I would mention that Sootie died on the anniversary of my Mum's death exactly one year after her.  They will be looking after each other no doubt.
