The best thing for both a uti and an overweight cat would be a all wet or raw diet. Most vets do not know very much about feline nutrition and make a lot of money selling their "prescription food". Dry food is the absolute worst thing to give a cat with a uti as they need moisture. I would urge you to read http://catinfo.org which is written by a vet who is actually an expert on feline nutrition.

Absolutely agree with Franksmom.

The first four or five ingredients are:  chicken meal, powdered cellulose, tapioca, wheat, wheat gluten, corn gluten meal.  HORRIBLE:  where's the protein?  That calculates to around 37% carbohydrates; cats need 0 (zero).

Frankly, I'd change vets.

Please read (http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth). This is written by a vet that is actually trained in feline nutrition. Most vets are not trained in feline nutrition and your vet is giving you very bad advice to have your cat on a dry diet with a uti. A non grain wet food is the absolutely best thing you can give a cat with a uti. The food you are feeding isn't even formulated for preventing uti's so there really is no reason to feed it.

What had caused her UTI? Is it bacterial? If so then it should be treated with antibiotics. Only way to know the cause is a full urinalysis including culturing the urine. Foods don't treat urinary tract infections, The "urinary health" foods purpose is to break up bladder stones. Does your cat have a bladder stone?

its treated for years and kept away with cd shes just wayy to fat so the vet is worried about diabetes also and put her on royal canine

She is not a free fed cat and we do not give her much food at all like 1/3 a cup for a year?? but she is still huge.

Everything went down hill when i started jumping on the whole non grain band wagon and started feeding foods like orjin, and evo something(had a golden package and a wild cat on front??), the high protien foods.  They were suppose to be the best but they totally ruined my cat and made her sick with uti issues. WE got that cleaned up and then went on cd. SHe had no problems except she just got so fat no matter what. And she does run around and chases things.

Grain free high protien raw diet is good for my dog but that almost killed my cat, she was in horrific pain.

Again high protein dry food is not good and no one is advocating it. Dry food makes cats fat and wet is the best thing for your cat. I will try one last time to get you to read www.catinfo.org which also has a section on both obesity and diabetes. It is your choice not to at least read the information.

Does your cat like chicken or other meats? If so you can pick up a bag of purebites(or any other) freeze dried treats and try to top the wet food with it. Or mix the wet and dry together and eventually increase the amount untill she is eating all wet.

I have heard that alot of fish in the food can cause problems with cats with UTI problems so you might want to read the ingredients of any food you give her.

Like most vets, your vet knows very little about feline nutrition. The fact that she recommended this RC dry food for an overweight diabetic prone cat is proof.

Dry food, especially high carb dry food, is the worst possible food you could be feeding to an overweight diabetic prone cat. This page, written by vet, will explain why.

 http://www.catinfo.org/?link=felinediabetes

If your vet had her on c/d for a long time, was she diagnosed with struvite crystals? If that is the case, you can get another urinalysis done to see if her urine pH is normal and if she has any more crystals. If her urinalysis is clear, there is no reason not to switch to a species-appropriate diet of wet meaty food (no grains or any other fillers) that is naturally mildly acidifying and is much better for losing weight. Your cat is overweight because she is eating a lot of excess calories in the form of carbs which she cannot efficiently process.

i could just not feed her until she ate my dogs food which is pure raw organic free range turkey ground whole but i dont think the brains or legs are in it. I was going to the store to add in green tripe and maybe beaver tails or something. OR pork liver.

This is strange but she loves fresh raw meat if she gets to kill the animal herself. LIke if she catches a rabbit on her own. And she only does it by falling asleep in long grass of weeds at the side of my house, she will wait for an animal to walk by and just attack and kill iit. Then she will drag it back to eat the whole thing. WHole squirrels also which weigh at least 1 pound or more. Whole birds etc.. It sounds bad shes a rescue we found 7 or so years ago, she just goes out to sit on our deck or side of my house during the day once a week or so.

Please do NOT withhold food for long. Overweight cats can very easily develop fatty liver disease.

If your cat does not like raw, will she eat canned food? If so, please try a high animal protein/moderate fat/low to no carb canned food. Fancy Feast classic pates fit this category, and most cats really like the taste. If you're going to feed raw, you will need to learn how to properly balance it. You can mix in a small amount of raw (less than 15% of total diet) into her canned food to get her used to it. However, if you are going to feed all raw, then you need to know the proper proportions and possibly supplement depending on the form of raw.

Thanks i did go through it and even book marked it, shes just so picky with the canned stuff also, I dont know why she does it, I am hoping the raw is just as good? Its always wet, they key is water content so.

She has and will eat mice that have gotten in the house like they are candy. My dog will eat mice and rats also. I am just trying to think of ways I could make their health better and be more practical and not go totally broke also. The vet food was insanly expensive as well.

Raising my own food would be great I dont know if people raise mice or rats for dogs and cats.  She hates canned more then raw, the last time i tried.  She will ussually follow me around and beg for her normal dry food.  I dont know why.

Raw is good as well, but it does need to be properly balanced for a cat. If you're interested in raw then please check out this resource thread in our Raw Feeding forum which has all the information you need. http://www.thecatsite.com/t/240809/raw-feeding-resource-thread

The catinfo site also has some good tips for transitioning a cat to canned food. It can be a long frustrating process with the hard core kibble addicts, but it's worth it in the long run to get your cat on a healthier diet and weight.

Raw is actually better if you can get her to eat it. There is a helpful section on catinfo on transitioning dry food addicts. I find toppers help so any treats like freeze dried chicken. Also Fortiflora works well.

for my german shepherd I balance it by adding pre/pro biotics enzyems herbs and omega 3 oils with vitamin 3 also

So just a bunch of herbs and special oils but most people dont even do that I do it for my dog for special needs, but the raw food I just get the butcher to put a whole turkey into the grinder, cut off the expensive parts like the breast and keep the gross parts mostly we dont like to eat and then but it all through. Ideally I can add extra whole liver in and tripe. But other than that nothing.

i dont know how a cat would do on that there is ONE thing a cat needs it starts with T that i read and will die if they do not have it. I am at work so its not that easy for me to flip around. Just concerns for me all day because i have 2 special needs animals that i am trying to improve at the sametime.

ALso dog can get ground whole goats, if i am lucky enough to find a old one past its prime. Really old birds that farmers dont wannt for meat or breeding, like turkey or duck or geese. As long as they are humanly kept and dispatched.

I hate mink farms and it makes me sick about fur but what do they do with all the mink meat? or chunchilla meat? Just feel sad i mean these are things that could be fed also i wonder for a canine at least.

Cats need taurine. There is a balanced recipe on catinfo.org. There is also a lot of information on how to feed a balanced raw diet of the raw forum.

for now i can give half cup of dry food and then put maybe a table spoon of raw organic turkey without the added stuff for the dog.

Maybe just try this for a month.
