I have a sweet 6 year oid cat that was diagnosed with 2 holes in his soft pallet that he was born with. In the last year he has gotten worse. He has a nasal discharge that is so bad that he has difficulty breathing and does not eat more than four to five bites at a time. He looks dehydrated too. My vets says he can operate but it will cost about 990.00 that I do not have and it is not guaranteed. He is the best cat, I don't know what to do.

I am so sorry to hear this.  I would be so distraught in your situation.

Perhaps you can talk to the vet about payment options or financing?  Also, you may check to see if there is an organization in your town that does discounted procedures.  In my town we have a place where vets volunteer to help dogs and cats a couple times a week.  Your local cat rescue may have some resources.

I would want to know more about what the vet means by "not guaranteed".  If it's unlikely that it will help your poor kitty, it may not be worth the risk to put him through it.  I feel so bad for you.  I know that when the time comes that I hope I make the best decision for my boys, but I also understand that decision is never easy or obvious.

I so hope that your boy recovers.

If he is dehydrated, can you do subq fluids on him in the meantime, until you either get the funds or figure out something else.  I don't know if that would help him or not to be more comfortable, but they are fairly cheap if you order the inventory on-line, and it's pretty easy to do at home.

Also, here is a thread that might help you since you don't have the money right now.  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/155462/cant-afford-a-vet-please-read
