We brought a feral cat up to where we were moving. She got pregnant. We took care of the kittens, they are all great, trained kittens. The mother escaped the week of her spaying. We didn't have luck with the havaheart trap that we just took the kittens in to get fixed first. We kept asking advise on catching her at the vet and all they said was the havaheart trap. Someone who brought their dog in said that they have trapped cats with a dog cage and string. She said you have to be fast with the string. It's worth a try. The woman who told us about the dog cage was outside getting her dog in her car when we were coming outside. She said she caught 4 out of 6 cats and we had to be fast with the string. We had to keep pushing the food further and further in the cage before we try to close it. So I kept looking online for pricing on a dog cage that was oversized and we asked around if someone had one we can borrow. Well I found one for $40 that was huge and it was free to ship. We tied string to the door and had it lead out through the back and we were patient with feeding her in the cage with the door open. Tonight I sat next to the cage like last night. Tossed her a piece of chicken. She ate it. Showed her a piece of chicken but threw it in the cage. I kept tossing more pieces of chicken and I put wet cat food further back in. When she was all the way in and I let her eat a little. I quickly closed the door and yelled for my fiance to help me. We closed it up with tie wraps. I was so excited I called the vet and wanted to find out when to bring her. It was at midnight when I called. I was surprised the vet doctor picked up the phone. I was trying to explain and apologized for calling so late. She is very dedicated to helping everyone. One of our kittens had a puss look around where she was fixed and we brought her in when we told them. The vet did three laser treatments to reduce the swelling. She's a great vet. So she told me to bring the mother cat to her place between 10am and 2pm. We are gonna be there waiting to get it at 10am. I hope they can tell the woman that told us about the dog cage idea that we are greatfull for her advise.

Nice tip about a dog cage as a humane trap.  40 bucks for a big dog cage doesnt sounds much, in Sweden you cant get dog cages for 280 krona (ie 40 dollars), it costs perhaps thrice that.

If you are continuing with rescue or TNR work, this cage will become handy time and again, not only for catching, but also for separating.  Say, having ferale cats there a couple of days after their spaying, before you let them out again.

I mean, you hadnt not threw away the money, you will surely get the worth om them back again and again.

Good luck!

My friend trapped Ritz and her litter mates with a similar drop trap--but a cat carrier.  Course the kittens were much smaller.  And the kittens were hungry and survived a 20 inch snow storm.

That cat and kittens were lucky to be rescued in that snow storm by your friend. Glad your friend was successful
