Hello. My cat Eden has been having a problem lately with his poop smell. He goes to do his business in the litter box as he usually does but recently it has been smelling horrible. Its not diarrhea.
I use the same brand of food but could it be that this is occurring because i changed what type. Such as instead of giving him seafood flavor i gave him a meaty flavor instead. I've done this before and i even feed him wet food sometimes but he didn't have such a strong horrible smell like this before.

Also, every so often he will poop outside the litterbox. It's not in a random location but right outside the litter box. I'm not sure if he is doing this on purpose or by mistake (like aiming his butt outside the litterbox). Dose this mean anything?

Well, the smell of his stool, just like in people, means that the food isn't agreeing with him.

Does he go outside? Could he have gotten into something? If not, and the only change is the food, then the problem is the food. Even though it's the same brand but a different type of protein, it may be a different formula. Is it a grain free food that's low carbohydrate? Cats are obligate carnivores, and do best with foods that are meat-based, where the protein doesn't come from grains or potatoes or something. If you want to learn more, this is an easy-to-understand website on cat nutrition, written by a vet: http://www.catinfo.org

Is the poop just outside the box? If so, it could be his butt is hanging over the side. You might want to consider a litter box with taller sides and see what happens. But peeing or pooping outside of the box CAN be signs of a medical problem.

Thank you for your input, I'm giving him a meat selection type from the brand of food but maybe i should find something healthier. I'll check out the website you posted and then see if its necessary to change his food.

And he hasn't peed outside his box so i'll check out new litterboxes, buy a new one, a hope he doesn't poop outside anymore.

Thank you again, your response was very helpful :)
