My 19 year old boy was diagnosed with an abdominal tumor yesterday. He had previously been on Prednisone 1x every other day for other issues, and the vet has suggested upping that to 2x every day. When he got it every other day, it wasn't too much of an issue - I could hide it in his food and he would eat eventually. But with doing it so often, he won't take any now.

My cat is the hardest to pill. It took the vet's best piller, two other people and about 15 tries to get a pill down him the other day. I really don't want to fight him either, as I'm not sure how much time he has left. We just want to make him comfortable.

Has anyone had good experience with compounding Prednisone? I'm hoping to compound the Pred and mix the antacid in that.

I've used a couple of different compounding pharmacies with good results for pred, it doesn't have a strong taste so it is an easy one to compound.  If you're comfortable with the thought of doing at home injections, ask your vet for injectable pepcid (famoditine); injections make everyone's life easier.

My understanding is that even compounded, famoditine still is slightly bitter.  At least that's what they told us when we had it compounded for our Svennie.  We only used it a few times, because we were usually able to hide his actual pepcid A/C 1/4 pills smooshed between Whiska Lickins soft treats, but on those rare occasions when that didn't work, then I would use the compounded famoditine mixed into stinky canned food, and sometimes he would eat it and sometimes he wouldn't.

Good luck with your guy.  I'm watching your other thread too
