Why won't my kittens eat soft cat food?

My cat had her very first litter of kittens and they are a little over five weeks old, I read online that kittens should start to eat soft canned cat food at 4-5 weeks old, but they won't eat any.

My mom and I both tried putting some on our finger and putting it up to their noses so they can smell it, we've made them sit and watch their mom eat it like we were suggested to do online, we've mixed it with kitten formula and we've even put it on the end of their noses so they can lick it off, but even when they do they won't eat it off a saucer, spoon or our fingers.

We've also tried to soak hard cat food in the formula to soften it up to see if they would eat it, but they didn't. And we've also tried to entice them with Tuna, but they wouldn't eat that either.

The other day one of the kittens looked like it was trying to go poop so my mom told me to get the cat box so they can learn to use it, but they tried to eat the kitty litter, my mom and me got it out of their mouth before they swallowed it though.

Why would the kittens find kitty litter more appetizing then soft cat food that they're supposed to eat? Is there a special kind of soft cat food that we need to get, or can you give us any tips on what we can do? We're giving them formula right now, but we can't give it to them forever and I don't want them to starve to death.

We're giving them formula because the mom refuses to let them nurse unless she's asleep or eating, every time they try to nurse when she's awake and not eating she'll lie on her stomach so they can't reach the nipples, she'll beat them up or she'll run off. My mom has been using a syringe to feed them because the nipple on the bottle she got is too big for them to suck on, but one doesn't like to eat from it and seems to be malnourished and doesn't seem like she's going to make it.

We've been giving them the paste kind of soft cat food, we've tried the following brands of soft cat food; 9 lives, Frisky's and Ever Pet.

Your tries with the wet food are the usual, you are doing it right, and normally, it shall kick in sooner or later.   You can also try with human baby food!  There are sorts they do love especially, although - sorry, I dont remember what sorts they do recommend  (I dont live in USA, so I seldom put on memory the american brands. Btw, is there some brand called for Gerbers?).

them trying the cat litter isnt unusual, so this is why it is important it is a non clumping litter. Less harmfull if they happen to eat some.

This with one weaker, who is on the verge of going down, sounds not good.

Please do fight for it!    I mean, if a kitten is sick or something and its fate is to die, so be it.

But to die because of owners not giving it enough attention, although they can with some extra effort

= a shame.  Even a sin, religiously speaking.  So please,  Fight on!

Good luck!

Ps. With the weakish. Make sure it is enough warm!  If not warm, it loses strengh, and dont process the food properly either.

Make sure it is not dehydrated.

You can try and perk it up a little with some sugar on its gum, before you give it food. Dextrose (glucose sugar) is best, but white caro syrup, or honey, do works also.

Gerber yes, I found it mentioned by other forumite:

"Gerber Stage 1 Chicken or Turkey baby food, is often called "kitty crack".  Cats love it.  It's great for giving medicine, rewarding or getting them to come to you.  I used to smear it all over my hands and allow Shadow to approach and lick it off."

Gerber's stage 1 chicken is what I've let one of my cats have before.  I was letting my baby try it and she hated it; however Noodles  was enticed by the smell of it when I warmed it a bit and she ended up eating the whole thing.

Thanks for the advice, I'll let my mom know so we can get some of that baby food to see if it works. I'll also let her know about the sugar,  white caro syrup, and honey. Wish me luck.

another thing,  some people say the Royal Canin Babycat canned food will sometimes tempt kittens who won't try anything else.

Is mom being fed in the same room the kittens are in? All I did was feed mama and when they were ready the kittens learned by watching mom eat. Wet food only at first. My foster mom was very thin and a kitten herself so I also left out dry food for her to free feed from, I just put it up out of the kittens reach.

My cat had a litter of 4 kittens July 14. All are doing great and one is eating canned and dry food. I have a stockpile of food!! Momma is picky and I wanted to feed her good quality food while she was pregnant. The royal canin canned and dry for gestational queen's and kittens is really great stuff! The one that is eating just gobbles up both of them! I also have Wellness Core kitten food-canned, and am feeding both the RC to momma and kitten. The other three in the litter are still not too interested in food. My vet said give it a good 5-6 weeks, and be patient ;). My cat (momma-Emmi) is scheduled to be spayed on the 24th. I am wondering, since the other 3 aren't weaned, if I should reschedule?? Calling the vet tomorrow to confirm that!! Don't want to force nature if I don't have to. Hope this helps!!

Yes, please re-schedule the spay.

Mom should not be spayed until the kittens are 8 weeks old, which would be September 1st.

It's too soon, especially since most of the kittens have not begun eating yet.

So you know, mom can still nurse after she is spayed.

Kittens should stay with mom for 10-12 weeks before being adopted.
