Good morning! TGIF!

And Happy Summer!!!

One of the things we enjoy doing during the summer is sitting outside at night and watching the night sky. I love to look at the stars and we enjoy going out in August during the Perseid meteor showers. Many years ago, we gave our son a telescope for Christmas and he and I spent hours outside at night looking at all kinds of things. He and I would check out all the constellations and the bigger stars; the telescope showed us two of Jupiter's moons and we could see a somewhat flattened version of Saturn...we're lucky that we're fairly rural; while we can't see the stars down around our horizon due to town lights, we can still see them overhead.

I used to come home from working second shift (at 11:00 at night), go out and jump in the pool, then lie on my back and watch the stars. Our son would come outside with me (at our house, nobody swims alone) and he and I would stay in the pool until 1 or 2 in the morning, just looking at the stars. After that, we were getting rather chilly and it would be time to get back in the house. Or we'd grab sleeping bags and go up in the hill out back and lie there for awhile. On the weekend, Rick would join us outside. More than once, we'd stay up all night and then make breakfast in the morning and then go to bed for a few hours.

I also took an Astronomy class in college and we had a lot of fun with the university telescopes on campus.

Rick and I will spend hours outside at night during the summer.

Do you look at the night sky?

I go out every clear night and look for the stars and planets and constellations that I know. If my porch light is not on, the nearest security light is 150 yards away through thick woods. I have a telescope I use sometimes. Don't forget - this weekend is this year's Super Moon.

I do, especially if there is a meteor shower, etc. It's the mosquitos in the summer that drive me back inside though.

There was an eerie red moon above Denver last night. There will likely be another tonight with the full moon. I've never seen anything like it !

It was absolutely gorgeous, until I thought about the reason for it-- the tragic wildfires.

I love looking at the night sky! I have a fairly decent view here on the southeast Georgia coast.

Sunday mornings for me to sit out with the cats and dog. Only time when we can have peace. Nine cats fighting who has the lap next.I drink my coffee in the cool breeze, sitting my rocking chair.

I have in the past; but it's been a while. The last time I went out last year the neighbors dogs got all riled up and barked the entire time.
During the day they have no problem with us out there; just at night.  Good guard dogs!

DH bought me a telescope several years ago and I've had some fun with it. But I haven't taken it out since we moved in!  It's actually in DD's closet and that's a bit of my problem...I forget about getting it till after she is in bed.

But I love just laying outside looking.  My Mom and I used to lay out on our tiny deck in sleeping bags to watch meteor showers when I was a kid.  DH and I spent one night in my parent's backyard watching one before we were married (a testament to what a man will do to impress a woman...there is no getting him to do it happily now!
)  Even after I got married my Mom and I once spent several hours on the roof of her family room picking out constellations.  I'm not very good at it though.  Beyond the "easy" ones.  That last time Mom and I did that we had an owl get too close for my comfort!!

I have an app on my kindle fire to help find constellations; I need to get out and try it now that its warm enough at night!

Well, unfortunately our night sky is washed out by the city lights, even in suburbia.

BUT one of my favorite sites to visit every once in a while is Nick Risinger's Photopic Sky Survey.  There are two options; the interactive 360 with markers, and the zoom in which is a bit sharper.  I've literally spent hours with them.

Yes; it's called Start Chart from Escapist Games.  If you get it and try it outside; let me know what you think!
There is also google sky map on android, it's pretty awesome. It can show planets, stars, meteor showers and more!

Oh yes! Love the night sky! We've been avid  fans of identifying constellations...and watching meteor showers, the Perseid showers are a real favorite. Yup, happiness is a lawn chair, sleeping bag, and and a meteor shower. Summer!!!

Love star-gazing.  And moon-gazing.

And very much looking forward to tomorrow's Super Moon!

I don't remember how much I paid for it.  There are other ones out there; that's just the one I have right now.  And I don't know if there is a difference in cost between the Nook and the Kindle.

They are still having problems with the directional compensation in AR. It always points north. Also, my Nook has no GPS activated on it.

I have Space Junk Lite. it was free and seems to work fantastic. The one you suggested is just 2.99, but my debit card is empty right now. Buying it before the first would cost an overdraft fee of 25.50

I use google play to look for apps. I am running CM10, which is Jellybean 4.1, on my Nook using a dual-boot system.

Meanwhile, back in the sky

My brother, who lives down in Tasmania said they've been getting Aurora Australis... It's quite unusual on this side of the world, and very, very beautiful.
