One of my friendly stray cats went to the vet and her top back molar was chipped, rotted, and root was exposed! She is getting the tooth removed tomorrow and any others that need to come out. (Hopefully no others). I've never had a cat that had a back molar removed, will she be able to eat normally once it heals?

Bless you for taking care of these stray cats!

She should be fine; cats who have no teeth eat just fine.  Contrary to popular belief, cats don't chew dry food, they swallow it whole.  Though of course wet food is better than dry.

I suspect she'll be in pain, will you be able to let her stay inside to recuperate?

Our outside kitty, Schofield, apparently got all his canines chipped or broken in fights In his pre-neuter days. He had to have them all removed and was back on his feeding schedule the day after he came home. They are tough creatures, so she should be fine. Offer her some pate and let her decide.

Unfortunetly I can't keep her in but she does have plenty of places to sleep I even have dog houses they can go in to sleep. I was just worried the bottom tooth below is sharp and now on top will just be gum and a hole I hope when she chews the sharp tooth won't stab the gums. I have plenty of canned food she can eat until she feels better.

Are you able to hold her/board her jsut one night to make sure she is fully ok? First 24 hours are usually the time side affects would show up/most important she can relax.  Also plan on being given antibiotics or them giving her a shot.  My vet ALWAYS does after a removal.  She should not have an issue with the gum getting hit by other tooth unless her teeth are misaligned to start with.

Well I was supposed to pick her up today, turns out this vet office doesn't have the equipment to safely remove the molar and i wasnt told, so she was under anesthesia for nothing. I talked to the head vet and worked out she is being boarded till Monday and the vet will personally bring her to the other clinic to do the removal. Otherwise she is ok and healthy still coming out of anesthesia but I'm
Upset they did that for nothing.

Especially with strays being they are hard enough to get to vets, why doesn't the office have equipment to do full removal? I don't get that and boarding is stressful but this time I had no choice due to the pain she has from the bad tooth.

Seems like they thought it would be more straight forward and after putting her under/getting good look or maybe even an xray they realized it was out of their scope.  If that is the reason then you have a GREAT!!!! vet.  It takes guts to admit your wrong or can not handle it.

She is spayed right?

The removal must have been more complicated than they realized. Otherwise, why put her under? I would be upset, too but she should be OK until Monday. At least they won't have to trap her again.

I agree waiting to do it the right way is responsible thing to do and for that they are great.

But there was 2 bigger issues
. 1- the vet tech that told me they remove molars here, when the head vet told me all molars are not done here regardless of tooth problem for pulling so instead of anesthesia once she now is going under again and I'm charged for it.
2- they at first wanted me to bring her to their other clinic, which is over an hour away and impossible for me to do especially being its an outdoor cat and I had no place to keep her overnight, the only reason they allowed boarding is because it was there mistake the job wasn't done after telling me it would be.
Basically otherwise she would have been sent home with the bad tooth in her.

Well how was the appointment made-was it made knowing it was a molar.  In my mind you should have to pay but not for 2 knock outs.  Unless you told them she needed a front tooth pulled and they took your word on it.

You in a real small town?  Can't imangine no vet could do it closer.  If they are taking her to a huge hospital have you talked about cost difference/what you want done/not done?

Does the vet know the tech said they do it-She needs to be made aware of policy and it stressed if you are not 100% on answer you go and find out from someone who is.

All the times I took a cat in for a known tooth issue they had an exam with me present, discussed what ones looked bad from the outside with knowledge they would xray and call if it was cost wise more then the previous estimate just to update me and then booked for surgery at a later date at time of payment

I guess your lucky in sense that you cant take her to the other clinic anyways so this helped out.

My cat is back today. She did great. She got antibiotic injection and after tooth was removed the hole was stitched up so no chewing issues should arise. She was like a celebrity because she was friendly and a stray. She was Very happen to be home I'm glad she didnt run away out of fear. And the vet said if I needed I can board there so that problem is solved. :)
