scabby paws?

So we have a four year old cat and recently she has had some scabs show up on her paws. We thought that she hurt her claws Somehow because that's where they seem to be concentrated, but now it's spreading and when one scab came off, so did most is her toe. We're telling quite frightened and plan to take her to the vet asap. Any idea what it could be/what to do about it?

There truly is any number of things that could be causing this, from something she's walked in/allergic to, to fungal infection to systemic disease.

We really can't give you any kind of definitive answer and it sounds serious.
