I'm so deflated right now.
My DD is moving up to real furniture that will last her till she moves out.  I've wanted to get her furniture that'll last, real wood that won't show the MDF underneath the veneer at the first ding (like my desk...).  Of course the super cute set I found at a local furniture store would cost me around $3,000.  Not happening.

Monday I found a set online that is very similar in style and finish for nearly 1/3 of the cost.  It seems to be better quality than say what I'd get from Walmart or Target; but I wouldn't expect it to match the quality of the $3000 set.  (I'm only looking to get a bed, nightstand, dresser and mirror.)  We purchased a new mattress for DD this weekend and it should arrive Friday or Saturday.

After thinking on it DH and I decided to order that set online.  They have showrooms; but the nearest to us is over 3 hours away.  They offer shipping to our area though so I was fine with it.  So I just went to do it.  They schedule the delivery right online...  The first date that came up is the end of SEPTEMBER!!
That's a LONG wait for something that isn't even a custom piece!  The set from the furniture store would have to be ordered because I want a wood finish and that lead time is only 4-6 weeks.

I'm not sure what to do.  I may try calling their customer service number when it quiets down here.  Is 3 months as unreasonable as it sounds to me?  They use their own service and even if we wanted to pick it up at that showroom 3 hours away; they say online orders cant be picked up in stores.
If I go with it and wait; DD will be sleeping on a mattress on the floor I guess!

For real wood, quality items, I'd check out estate sales.  People who have retired generally have quality furniture because they have the funds to purchase good quality items, indeed, sometimes antiques that have been passed down from previous generations.  Good stuff flies out the door within the first hour, but the second day is often half price off of anything left.

Caveat about pictures on-line versus showroom:  items can look better on-line than in real life.  Can you find out people's opinions of the furniture and the company (including promises of delivery date)--Better Business Bureau, perhaps?

I've been looking on Craigslist and the like for months without finding something I'd like for a good price.  Even things I wouldn't want; I'm amazed at the prices people are asking.  I wish we still had the set that was mine as a child.  It had belonged to my mother as she grew up but we passed it on when I was given a full size bed.  Who knows where it is now!  I still have (and use) the night stand; but not the bed.

I've not seen any estate sales here recently; and even that could keep her sleeping on the floor for a while.  Which I suppose is no tragedy and would remove the need for any rails to keep her from falling out of bed.
I just hate the idea of buying something just to have it.  I want to like it too so I have no desire to replace it in a few years!

Yeah, I know what you mean, though for me it is usually blouses to match pants:  I buy a blouse because the color matches, but don't really like the style.

And, yes, some of the estate sales and thrift stores price items really high.

in transition...
We waited over a month for a table and chairs to be delivered, but we had seen the type of furniture we were getting in person and knew it was exactly what we had been looking for, and we understood we'd have to wait for it because it wasn't the kind of thing that's pre-made and sitting in a warehouse waiting for someone to buy it. IMO, if you know that what you are buying is the very thing you want, then 3 months isn't such a long time in the grand scheme of things. But if you are unsure about the quality or for some other reason, it'll probably be less stressful for you to skip it and find something else.

If you really like the furniture, it's probably worthwhile waiting for it rather than settling for something you'll get faster but not be quite as satisfied with. We ended up waiting five months for our living room sofas, so a 3-month wait doesn't sound all that unreasonable to me.

Thank you for your replies.  Most of our good furniture we were able to get within a few weeks of ordering it.  And it seems that is the way with any of the local furniture dealers.  But we've always been able to select something from the showroom (which really isn't much... I'm still using the dresser and nightstand I had growing up! and thats why I thought maybe I should ask here!).  If we were able to get the set I want from the local place where I know they don't keep those colors/finishes stock; I could see the wait.  But this just doesn't seem like that sort of furniture place.

I called them and figured out what is going on.  It's out of stock for the warehouse that ships to my area.  They have it at their main warehouse; but won't ship it to the other one unless it's just not something they sell in that area (for an additional charge of course).  Since they do carry it at that warehouse; I'd have to wait the 3 months.  It's kind of frustrating because it shows as in stock for my area on their website and you'd think they'd want the sale now and not chance me finding something else.

So I think the game plan for now is to let DD sleep on the mattress right on the floor while we look for something else.  If we haven't found something else within the next few months; then maybe we will still get this set for her.  I won't have to worry about her falling out of bed either.

It depends on what it is and how much I want it.

When I ordered my bedroom furniture, I ordered from The Brick online. I think it was over 2 months for them to deliver the furniture to me. I loved the set so much and had spent over 5 years looking for something I loved, so I was willing to wait for it.

No.  I would look locally at used furniture to get highest quality at a very reduced rate or maybe free minus the truck rental.  If used smell it well for smoke as smoke does not tend to go away.

When I was about 10 we ordered a dining table.  It was horrible, many months of Mom trying to be patient then calling to cancel and day later it was at house.  We dumped it before a few years as it was not quality it was advertised to be and company had since gone out of business.

Hey no monsters under the bed either:p

LOL  Well DH happened to have a very light day at work; which almost never happens.  So he came home showered and we jumped in the car to visit the local furniture store the expensive set was at.  The sales lady checked the price and said it was more than even she would be willing to pay for a twin bed.
And said it's good; but I'd be paying for the name not just the bed.  Long story short; we were able to purchase her bed, chest and night stand for slightly less than the online store set I'd have had to wait 3 months for.  It's a similar finish; somewhat different style.  But it's definitely a good enough quality to last her for many years.  And it is scheduled for delivery on Saturday.  Which is when we pick up her mattress too.

I'm exhausted.  Now to get the bedding set and a spare set of sheets and I can really be done.

Oh wait...I have to empty her room so they can bring the furniture in.

I'm glad you were able to find something that you like, that will last, and that will be delivered sooner than 3 months. Your little girl will be thrilled!

When we bought the elliptical from Dicks, we waited for a good month anyway for delivery. Kind of the same problem as yours. Not in stock locally, had to be shipped from out of state, and it had to be shipped freight. It was a hassle.

Thank you!  I had taken a picture on my cell while we were there and sent it to my mother. This morning I got a text saying she likes the other set better.
So do I; but the one the local place could get me is just unreasonable.  I'd have to save for a while and even then I don't think I'm willing to pay $900 for just the bed!  And that other company didn't seem very excited to take my money; or you'd think they'd have no issues with transferring things between warehouses!  Florida and Georgia are not THAT far apart!  And it's an extra fee of $170!  So I guess they just didn't want my money!
It's enough of a risk to be buying furniture only seeing an online picture you know?

I think we got a good value for our money. Which I was ultimately after.  I still need to order bedding for her; but once I do I'll see if I can get a few pictures up here.  Her room is really a bit of my pride and joy....the work I put DH through before she was born...  Wainscoting, paint effects on the wall, crown moldings...
  Good thing he loves me.
