Good morning friends! Since it's summer (for most of us) I'm wondering about your thoughts on grilling and BBQ.

Do you have a grill / BBQ? What kind is it and does it work well? Do you cook the food on it or is that someone else's job?

(It's my understanding that BBQ is slow cooked over wood or coals using tougher cuts of meat. Grilling cooks foods quickly - think steaks, burgers, veggies.)

We bought a propane grill this summer, it's really easy to use but we've only used it twice so far. I had done the research and we got a Weber because of the good reviews and also great customer service. Before that we went through a couple of generic charcoal kettle grills but they are terrible to use here since there's always a cold wind blowing outside cooling down the coals!

My husband has taken over the grilling duties this year. It is too much for me these days to prepare meals using appliances that are both outside and inside.

My father used to make great BBQ brisket, OMG. He slow cooked it over mesquite wood from trees that are all over the place in central Texas (nobody wants them on their land, they are pretty invasive and have wicked thorns). My dad had his own sop recipe - I have a copy and am going to try it out this summer. MAN that brisket was good!

I love grilling/BBQ food!  We have a charcoal grill and I love it; but I do wish we had a gas one for quicker, weeknight meals.  It's DH's job to man the grill.  I prep things and he gets to put them on and watch it. hehe  Or at least light the grill.  I'm not a fan of matches.

My Step-dad usually did the grilling when I was in my teens.  Mom would sometimes; but he likes doing it.  He would even grill in the snow and DH lets him takeover when we are grilling here.
My favorite is the salmon he and Mom do.  Amazing!!

We've had times, here and at my Mom's house, where we'll just cook a bunch of things on the grill to purposely have leftovers.  With the charcoal grill; you dont want to spend all that time and charcoal just to cook a few burgers know what I mean?  So I'll do some chicken and things too.

My Dad is also big on grilling but we don't get to visit him very often.  The best present I ever got him was a new spatula for his grill with his favorite nascar driver's number etched into the flipper.  The back end of the handle also had a bottle opener.  His friends were so impressed he had to call me to find out where I got it because they wanted one too...

We are big grillers here, too. We grill anything, from meats to poultry, to fish, to shellfish, veggies, romaine lettuce (grilled Caesar salad, anybody?), peaches, apples, slices of pineapple, pizza! I love to hollow out big sweet onions, fill them with baked beans, and throw them on the grill. Potatoes, French fries, you name it, we'll grill it. We'll get up and grill breakfast, we'll do lunch on the weekends, and then dinner. When our niece comes up to visit her parents, she'll let us know ahead of time, because she just loves grilled pizza.

We just bought two really nice pork shoulders to do in our gas grill for pulled pork for our July 4th picnic. It takes 5-6 hours to get a pork shoulder done enough to pull. Wonderful stuff. I make my own BBQ sauce and mop and go to town. When it's hamburgers, steak or salmon, Rick does the grilling. For the pulled pork and for whole chickens, that's my area. Tequila lime grilled shrimp....yum! I use the same marinade for chicken as well; in fact, I have a chicken breast marinating in the fridge now for tonight. Stuffed pork chops on the grill. I think I have 8 cookbooks now that are strictly for recipes for grilling and smoking.

Last year, we were watching QVC one night and they had these grilling baskets to help with smaller foods like shrimp, small veggies, and the like. You can make a wonderful stir-fry in those baskets. We bought two of them and use them often.

We use wood chips in the gas grill and have a good variety of hickory, mesquite, apple chips, etc. on hand so that we can experiment.

I use a thermometer that I insert through a potato so it sticks out the other end and then put the potato in the grill so that I can keep an eye on the temperature inside the grill better than just using the Low, Med, and High settings. I can set the thermometer for a certain temp and it will beep to let me know when I'm there. And then it's just a matter of regulating the burners to keep the temp where I want it. Newer gas grills have a temperature gauge, but our Char Broil is about six years old now and doesn't have bells and whistles. We've learned to improvise.

We don't grill much in the winter, especially once it's snowed. But every now and then, when we really have an urge for something from the grill, he'll go out, if the winter wind isn't too bad.

We're talking now about getting a charcoal grill for those long and slow pork shoulders, just to see how different it would be from our gas grill. And I've wanted a smoker now for a few years.

My husband loves to grill and smoke, and we were able to buy a Big Green Egg - Large at a super price last year.  We've yet to baptize the pizza stone (gluten-free version) I bought him last Christmas (of course, before going gluten-free..lol).  We will be tackling a brisket soon, as just this past Fall we bought our first freezer, and buy a side of beef as needed..we have our 2012 brisket still to make.
We made our first homecured smoked ham this past year as well.  We always brine and then smoke a turkey for Thanksgiving :)

We do steaks, chicken, veggie skewers, will be making some bacon from sidepork soon, and I want us to try smoking mozzarella, oysters in the future.  Jalapeno Poppers are the latest recipe dh tried making.

My parents weren't much on outdoor cooking. For Dad it was too much like the Army, and for Mom it was too much like the wood/coal stove she learned to cook on when growing up.

Well I live in a 380 square foot apartment, and my complex really frowns on grills, so I have a George Foreman grill and that's as close I get to grilling unless I visit my daughter and her sig other.  :)  I do like the GF grill though I can cook anything on it veggies and chicken and beef and even large portabellos ... :)  I live alone (no other humans) so yeah I do the cooking, but I don't mind, I like the GF, it's something different at least than baking my proteins.  :)

My husband does the grilling. We only use our Weber grill. We had a gas one once, but the food was not nearly as good as when cooked over charcoal. Usually our meal is steaks or hamburgers,l sometimes chicken.
