hi all! newbie here :)  well, our cat has been throwing up quite a bit lately. he's indoors, 13ish, regular weight, active & healthy stool....we leave dry down all times which he eats occasionally. loves his mush! which we give him in small portions throughout the day. i chop up the big pieces as he has a tendancy to not chew/ licks the gravies off first! his breath is atrocious so i'm wondering if it's a bad tooth making him feel bad then throw up? there are no plants for him to munch on. he throws up almost immediately after eating. we're taking him tot he vet on payday but until then- any ideas? advice? thanks! :)

(p.s. great smilie collection!)

What is mush? Canned food?

How long has he been vomiting, and how often? Does it always happen right after eating, and the food is coming back up? That usually happens if a cat eats too fast or if there is a blockage of some sort. If this is new behavior, then it is definitely good to have a vet visit.

His breath being bad is probably a sign of something not right in the mouth, but unless it's bad enough to cause an infection which would have some other symptoms, I don't think it's the cause of the regurgitation.

sorry, sorry everyone who has replied here and in the other thread (before the post got moved here)- distracted! :)

well, yes, mush is the wet food.

he threw up 4 times in about a day before i made this post.

it was close to immediately after eating.

he's generally not a fast eater.

we have him set up to visit the vet at payday. general m.o.t. as it were ;)

so what i did after all the barfing was keep him off all food for about a day (with plenty of water, no worries!) then i fed him small bits of wet only, chopped up into teeny pieces or smooshed altogether! a consistent schedule of this up until =this morning= produced a 3 inch furlog!
yay! soooo, so far so good!

now he will stay on the same type and schedule of food & i will leave a small amount of dry down overnight only. also, we are cutting back on the "dreamies"! cat crack, that stuff is, lol

and i figured the bad breath thing/ bad tooth/ nausea wasn't all connected. just making sure, covering my bases :)

OK, so the hairball may have been what was blocking him up, and hopefully that frequent vomiting will now stop.  However, the awful breath is still a sign that something is not right...possibly a bad tooth, or at the very least, teeth problems.

Also, throwing up hairballs is not really supposed to happen.  Contrary to popular believe, hairballs are supposed to go out the other end
.  If everything is functioning 100%, they will do exactly that.  So...something is not functioning 100%.  Oddly enough, even something like an ear infection can cause the digestive tract to act up, so it's possible that he does have a tooth infection, which then causes inflammation in the body, which causing things not to function at 100%.  Isn't the body a magnificant operating machine!  Sometimes the only problem is trying to find out just which little part needs the grease, so to speak

understood!

all will be (or begin to be) revealed come payday vet day! should be interesting as we got him from a woman who had him most of his life and only took him to the vet once! he was feisty so she never took him again...

he's still feisty but that's what vets and their assistants are trained for and paid to deal with!

i'm looking forward to taking him to my local vet, who has rejected my applications to work there *8 times*. sweet justice
