i noticed recently in the past 2 or 3 days that Jake has developed bad breath (if he yawns or we are play fighting and he bites playfully). I was just googling this and found out that a bad breath that smells like urine can be a sign of kidney disease, and I am really freaking out trying to determine if his breath smells of urine...I am not sure but now that I am looking for that specific smell i've convinced myself that this is it...

It is not really apparent at all if his mouth is closed, I tried to get close to him and smell him but it's really only noticeable if his mouth is open..

He is playing, eating and drinking as normal. Should I take him to the vet to get blood work? I don't want to be one of those people who goes to the vet for anything for no reason, but at the same time I would hate myself if it turned out to be kidney disease...

He had his yearly exam last month and the vet checked his teeth and said they looked good, so I don't think that's it...ugh I'm so worried I'm going out of my mind :( he has had bad breath before for a few days and it has gone away after a few days but I don't know, I do think it smells like urine :( but with no other symptoms I don't know if my worrying is justified or not

How old is he? My cat had bad breath for 2 months when he was teething and the vet said it's totally normal

I would definitely take Jake in for another exam, blood work and urinalysis. Bad breath can be an indicator of many things, and an okay check up a month ago doesn't mean something isn't wrong now. A cat's health can change that quickly, in part because cats are the masters of hiding illness.

Keep us posted

We know our babies best and usually if you sense something off, it's best to have it checked out. Breath that smells like urine is not good and can be a sign of kidney disease. Showing no outward symptoms doesn't mean something is not going on, and possibly an early enough sign to catch it early. I'd have him checked.

He is 4 and a half...I read that a 4 year old cat is the equivalent of a 35 year old human .... To me he is a baby and that was shocking..anyway his breath doesn't smell as much today...lol he is annoyed at me because I open his mouth to smell it so often! But if I put my nose right on his mouth unless I open it I don't smell anything. He is so patient, he doesn't even mind when I pull his lips up slightly to bare his teeth so his mouth can open...such a good boy! I am also annoyed that my vet didn't do blood work this time, he did it last year.. But it was a different vet this time and he said he is not due for blood work this time. I will watch him today and if I can smell anything tonight ill take him in tomorrow. I am reluctant to just go not because I don't want to take him but because I have this paranoid personality, especially if I read of symptoms online I will convince myself I see them, both in myself but more so in my cat...like I am not too sure how bad his breath is,I know cats generally don't have the best smelling breath ..
one time I thought he must have heart failure or something must be wrong with him, because his breaths sounded kind of loud, but the vet did blood work and everything came back perfect...

Also jake recently moved in with me to my apartment, he used to live with my parents... So I have snapped back to being a mom and being over caring and over protective...but also I am worried the move caused him stress and lowered his immune system. He has been such a healthy cat so far, he's never been sick, always extremely alert and extremely playful ...anyway thanks so much for the responses, I will keep you updated!
