I have NEVER heard of AC not responding to a raccoon reported during DAYTIME.  They are just not out during day unless they have become tame or are sick.  If AC refused to come out during DAY call the county health department and work up to state.

I am in Canada and it is different because they are not allowed to trap racoons in my city because they have somehow been declared a protected species. The professional animal removal companies can only trap them if they are inside your house and then can only put them 1 km away. If they are on your porch like in our case they apparently can't remove them (we called three companies).  Animal control cannot come unless the racoon is sick or injured. Actually my city has been declared the racoon capital of the world, it is a total nightmare (http://www.thestar.com/opinion/edit...andits_raccoons_are_driving_toronto_wild.html). Last year some guy was aressted for hitting racoons with a shovel in his backyard because he could not get rid of them (I do not agree with violence). I like that we have progressive animal rights laws, but I do not understand why racoons are so protected when cats aren't. I also don't understand why we can't humanly trap them and relocate them.

Sorry for hijacking the thread and I hope where the OP lives there are not such crazy laws.

I am talking about SICK raccoons.

No reason to call AC for healthy ones, though how you have so many that can not be good for them overall considering they will be getting used to people and finding easy sources of food from the trash.

On one of your days off you could do a stake out in your car like we used to do, we only went looking on weekends. We would go driving at around 10 or 11pm then park in the spots where we knew they hung out, it took patients but we always saw them. It'd be worth the effort if you could find out for sure what was happening.

Are the police any better:  if the raccoons are threatening property or life, maybe you could call them.

You're in a hard place, and to be congratulated for whatever you can do.

I'd reach out to rescue groups, in your county or state.

Sorry I haven't responded to anything, been really sick.  Now we are having ferals coming around that look like they've been attacked and very sick like with distemper and now I really don't know what to do.  I cannot afford to do anymore for them than I already do and I don't want them hanging around on my porch because these are very obviously sick cats.  One already died and now another one has come around looking bad and has a scratch on it's side and is limping (a young female that was a very sweet cat, but now I'm afraid to touch it).  Any suggestions?  There has been distemper around here among other things and it hangs in the environment plus the coons carry it.  And whoever said they have seen cats and coons getting along, so have I, but if the coons are hungry enough they will eat anything that they can get their claws into.  I know this first hand that they kill cats and kittens alike.  I put a radio on my porch and turned it to a talk station and so far the coons are not coming on my porch, but for cats that are out in the neighborhood getting attacked it's sure not helping them.  I am at a real loss here as to what to do about this sick cat that will probably infest the 2 others that stay on my porch.

Oh, it sure does look like it has distemper, eyes are all infected, wobbly gait and looks VERY skinny compared to what she looked like before.  Animal Control here will take it to our joke of a humane society and euthanize it just because it's a feral cat.  Even if it was healthy they would do that.  I will help it problem is that there are 2 other cats that so far are healthy and I am scared they will get it.  I can take her there and maybe I will have to, but that's what they will do.  This cat is barely eating or drinking and it's meow is very weak.  I don't even know if any medical care could help it.

No, she is a young cat that has never gone into heat.  And she doesn't look like she scrapped with another cat because she is limping.  I don't know what happened, but she is very sick from whatever happened to her and this just happened to another cat around here, only his lip was ripped off and he was in horrible shape and died.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that if I do call Animal Control they will ticket me for having 2 cats on my porch off and on.  Even though they are both feral cats that are socialized to me and my husband and choose to sleep on my porch, they are not literally my cats or I would bring them in.  I don't let my cats outside, but I cannot have anymore animals inside because I already have pets.  I just feel so helpless as to what to do and I'm afraid this isn't going to be the last of it.

If she is that sick it may be best to put her out of her misery and bring her to the humane society yourself and stay with her. Of course the best thing to do would be to get her medical care.

There isn't anything like that around here and we don't even know where they're living, just know that they're around.  If I put a cat with distemper into my truck to take it to the Humane Society will the distemper get all over my truck?  I cannot let that happen, but they will take the sick cat.

I cannot afford medical care and most vets around here will also want to euthanize a feral cat.  The laws of protecting animals in my state are very, very weak.  I even called a vet to see if I brought her in would they treat her without charging me since it's not my cat, but they told me to call animal control, which I won't do so my last resort was the Humane Society and I'm sure they'll euthanize her too because she's feral.  I don't know what else to do.  She is going to spread this around like wild fire if I don't do something.

If it is really distemper(and not rabies) then the care needed and all to help get over is alot.  You are having raccoons killing the cats and there is no guarantee if they are treated they have a safe place.  I think I would call in possible rabid stray(s) hanging out.  At least they will act on that and yes euthanize and test.  But as a community cat that wandered into your yard there should be no cost to you.

I took the cat to the Humane Society where they will probably euthanize it, but I didn't have much choice.  I felt really bad, but like you said I don't even know what it had and it's not something I could see letting go as there are other cats around here too.  I don't know for sure what's going on, but something is definitely attacking these cats.  I wish I could catch it.  I just hope it ends, this is the 2nd cat so far.  I hate seeing this type of thing.  Thank you for the info.

It is the best you could do with what you have.  I am sure they will examine test it for few major things as if its rabies or distemper they need to know.

Did they take your contact info down?  If you have inside cats are they up to date on shots?

At least it will not suffer and get attacked while in that shape.

You wouldn't believe this area, I think they killed her while I was giving them a donation.  Very stupid about distemper.  They had never seen it, so that should tell you something.  Or if they have they do not know what the cat acts like.  I did not give them contact info. because they won't tell me anything since it's not my cat.  I hate that place, but I had no alternative since I do have indoor cats and 2 on my porch that with my luck will end up sick next.  I really think it's distemper.  I've seen it before and that's what it looks like to me.  There was no foaming of the mouth, no erratic behavior or nothing that would indicate rabies.  I know coons carry distemper much more often than rabies, they have found that out and have been misinterpreting what they carry because they can't get too close to them.  A very sad day and I hated to have to do that.  Thanks for your concern.

When you have so many cats in one place and only so much resource there is little that can be done.  If they kept her and saved her where would a feral go that was safe?  If that hits the young kittens treatment or not the death rate is VERY high.

I know years ago around me the distemper was the canine version.  Not sure if that is based on location or if the canine is more common? Or lack of knowing about the feline version. We had a baby raccoon test negative for rabies and they(AC and wildlife rehabber) told us the cat would be fine.

It sucks when there is no money but when it comes down to it shelters need to play with what they have to get the most animals spay/neutered/adopted and health wise limited.
