Hi everyone,

About 3 weeks ago, I got a new kitten that had been rescued along with his siblings from the streets. The girl that rescued them gave them an over the counter dewormer and had them weaned off formula and eating on their own at 4 weeks. I got him at 4.5 weeks and he's been eating and doing great. I took him to the vet last week for a checkup and the vet said he looked healthy. He couldn't get a stool sample to test for worms because he had nothing inside.

However, what I have noticed that the kitten does is that when he poops, his muscle pops out just a little, but it always goes back in within a few minutes after pooping.

Also, as of a few days ago, he's been looking very very thin. You can easily see and feel his bones. His appetite has decreased a little and he did throw up a little two mornings earlier this week. We think he may have worms, but I'm more concerned about his pooping issue.

Is having that type of rectal prolapse normal in kittens? His poop always seems normal, although yesterday's was a little soft and slimy towards the end.

He eats wet canned Wellness Core kitten food and though he always has water out, he never drinks it. He urinates as normal though and poops about twice a day which was always normal for him.

We made an appt. with the vet tomorrow to get him checked out, but have any of you had any similar situations? His personality is normal and he's as crazy as ever.

I'd appreciate any advise. Thanks

I wouldnt call the prolapse normal nor OK, but it occurs sometimes. Several of our forumites experienced it, but the kittens got OK after a while.

My advice for now is you try to get his poo sooner a little loose than hard, if you manage with that trick...

As he eats canned wet food, he doesnt need to drink much. So just some occasional drinking is surely enough.

Very good you are going to the vet with him for an closer examination.  Take with you a sample of his poo, even if not entirely fresh. You can perhaps have it in a suitable can of some sort? Plastic or glas.

Good luck!

Thinking again on what our forumites retells, the prolapse was in weakish kittens. So it seems for me this is not really they having problem with the "behind", but a possible symptom with weakish kittens.

If and when they got good (again), the prolapse problem seems to disappear.

Lets wait for the rapport from the vet.

Ok guys, so they did blood work and checked his feces and all came back negative. They gave him a dewormer anyways though. They also sent him home with some nutritional powder to sprinkle on his food.
They said the prolapse is most probably due to constipation so we have been adding more water to his wet food and he's eating it up a lot more quicker than before.

He did poop out two huge roundworms this morning though, so I guess he did have worms after all. Going to call the vet when they open just to let them know.

I don't know if he feels better inside, but he's acting extra crazy this morning by running around and getting into trouble. :)
