Hello fellow cat lovers! I am new to this site and I am thankful that I discovered it! We very recently became "parents" to a kitten who my son named Bubbles wondered onto our porch recently. Long story short, before we could get her to a vet, she came into heat and became pregnant. We do not know for sure how old she is but she appears to be quite young still. However, two days ago, she gave birth to two very adorable kittens in our living room. I noticed last night that the kitten are infested with fleas! I tried to tell the kids not to let her in the house until we could have her checked out. Anyway, what do I do now?! I know that we can not treat Bubbles while she's nursing but knowing that they have these things crawling on them and I'm sure biting them is breaking my heart. I also know that treating the whole house is extremely important. Am I fighting a losing battle? What are my options at this point? We have become so attached to Bubbles and the kittens and would hate to have to get rid of them.

You said A, you got to say B too, or ELSE...  Besides, the fleas are already in your house.

Have them in this room, defleasing of the room comes later.  Take care of what is important, your task, ie the babies and the mom.

Now defleasing of the babies.

They are too young for any chemicals. You must begin manually.  You can also try with some bath with a suitable soap.  Be verrry careful, and also, dry them afterwards...

continue a little later.

You can use a flea comb on bubbles and the kittens gently. Vacuum your house as much as possible. You might have to avoid the nursing area though. Bubbles may not tolerate the vacuum near her kittens. I know this is your living room so I wish I could offer more advice.
I hope someone who has kitten experience can weigh in. I don't have a clue if any products are safe to use around the house with such young kitties.
You do want to keep her inside. She will go into heat again before the cats are even fully weened.

Continuing.  They allowed to be inside is good. This is the standard to do with high pregs / moms with babies. Your mistake was to not have them in a bathroom or somewhere where it is easy to clean, as the mom isnt properly dewormed.

Can you get a preparate called for Revolution spot on / Stronghold, in some countries? Revolution comes also in a variation for nursing queens.

This works as a dewormer and defleaser. Splendid for the mom, and probably will help the kittens too, they get some with moms milk.

If you cant get it, ask your vet what preparates are suitable and which you can get at your place.

Beware of "over the count" preparates sold at pet shops. Some may be OK, but many are dangerous.

So if you buy there, ONLY if you are entirely sure they are OK. Google on them at least.

Otherwise if you cant get any preparates, you must do it manually.  The mom you can of course bathe. Our american forumites use the Dawn dish-washing soap, although most mild soaps will probably do.

The kittens are really too small for bathing, but you dont want fleas on them. If there are more than some individuals, if they are heavily infested and you desperate - the emergency has no law.

You can try to comb, you can try to pick them by hand.  You must perhaps bathe them in this Dawn soap. Be careful so they dont get any water inside. The water must be sufficiently warm but not hot. Be very careful with drying them afterwards, and keeping them warm afterwards.  Small kittens are very easy to chill down if wet, and they take it badly.

Good luck!

ps.  Vacuum cleaning of the house.

there are such anti-fleas collars. Most of them are NOT good to have on the cat - they are poisonous also to the cat... But they are very useful at vacuuming.  You open the vacuum. You open up such a fleas-collar. In with this opened up collar into the sack!   It kills off the fleas in the vacuum cleaner.   :)

You probably cant vacuum at her nest.  Prepare a movable nest. In with mom and kittens into this movable nest, take them aside to another room, say a bathroom.  You say the mom is friendly?

While they are away, you can clean their room and their ordinary nest.  When this is done, you  bring them back.

Make also sure you change the bedding now and then, at least every second day, preferably every day, so the sheets are clean.

She is very friendly. She has become quite attached to me. My son was the one who noticed she was in labor (not knowing what he was pointing out to me). I immediately got a large suitcase that we no longer use and lined it with an old sheet and old towels, so her nest is movable. Bubbles obviously trusts us because she will allow my children and myself around her and her kittens. She even allows us to "pet" the kittens. Thank you for the advice. Keep it coming lol please.

Our 5 day old kitten was covered in fleas the other morning, I am thinking they were on the mom and they hatched and jumped to the baby. We've been doing Dawn dish soap baths and changing all of the bedding daily. We also treated the mom. I also moved them from my daughters closet and cleaned real well in there. Today there was only 3 fleas on him. I am hoping we are done with the flea mess!
