I got my kitty Luna about a week ago and took her to the vet ASAP to have her first vaccine (she's 8 weeks old) and get her checked up on. It's been a week since then and her mood has drastically changed. She sleeps all day and barley eats and she seems to be walking weird. She also is sitting in an "s" shape on her back legs with her paws close and under her. She doesn't want to play at all which is weird because she wasn't like that before.

I'm definitely taking her to the vet this afternoon but I'd like to know what you guys think is going on so I have a better idea of what to expect and ask the dr about

Given the timing, I would suspect a vaccine related reaction.

Hi lunaandsol!

Just a couple of ideas/cautions for you:
  • yes, it might be a "reaction" to the vaccines he had - that could account for the 'lethargy'...but, from all I've seen and read about, that sort of reaction lasts a few days at most
  • my 'gut' feeling comes from the limping symptom...that the other symptoms (withdrawal, "weird" walk and sitting stance, lethargy) are stemming from something that's happened to whichever leg he's favouring....perhaps he's hurt it (unbeknownst to you) - or, perhaps the injection itself did some damage (I've read of this kind of occurrence). I don't know whether/not this might have been (IF in fact, it happened at all) a one-in-a-million unfortunate outcome by a competent Vet - or, as the result of a sloppy procedure by a less-than-competent Vet - I have no idea.
  • because we know that not all Vets are 'created equal', I always recommend that people choose feline-only Vets/Vet clinics...that will not guarantee competency - it is always, however, the best place to begin a quest for competency. If yours is not a feline-only Vet, it might be time to consider seeking one out.
  • Not all vaccines are 'created equal' either....you need to stay away from vaccines which contain an "adjuvant" (these are called "adjuvanted vaccines"). Adjuvants are addititives to the basic vaccine which cause a greater reaction in the animal - the thought being to better stimulate the immune system's "learning"....unfortunately, these adjuvants are known to cause a type of cancerous growth - sometimes 10-12 years later - and these cancers are often fatal. Non-adjuvanted vaccines are readily available and most competent feline veterinarians know to use them versus the adjuvanted variety. You might be well-advised to inquire today whether/not a non-adjuvanted vaccines were given to Sol - I would.
  • I'll give you a caution about a drug which, IMO, is inappropriate for cats - but which, however, is very commonly prescribed and is licensed for use in cats in your country. It's an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug called Metacam - these drugs cannot be metabolized by cats and damage kidney cells. I would politely refuse if such a med were offered - there are alternatives if required. I think it's fair to say that, most people who have been around here for a while generally recommend staying well away from this med. So, just a 'heads-up' and a tidbit to prep you and to keep in your 'back pocket' for future reference.
Hope some of that helps. Keep us updated!

Hi I've taken all your input into consideration and am in the process of changing my vet to a feline only vet. However it is Luna who's not feeling well, Sol on the other hand is just fine she's just as energetic and welcoming as she was before the vet.
