I came home today and Chester had pooped 5 places in the house. This is also the second day in a row I've had to clean him in the tube for dirty bottom (found it is the easiest way).

In Chester's first 10 years (now 11) he had only pooped on the floor maybe 3 times in his life.... but this pooping on the floor in almost a month now has steadily increased since I've given him the FlortiFlora (he has been on it since May 18th - and I think if it should have helped, it would have by now, right?).

I stuck with it because of vet recommendation. Someone in one of my groups mentioned proviable (

Amazon.com: Proviable Kit for Cats and Small Dogs, Includes 15ml Proviable-KP Paste and 10 Proviable-DC Capsules: Pet Supplies

)... and I've also heard of Nutramax BACTAQUIN[emoji]8482[/emoji] Digestive Health Support For Cats... a friend uses that for her cats.... but what is best for the digestive system when symptoms are like Chester's?

He has diarrhea at least every other day..

Another note:
I took him to the vet in town last week (not the internalist) for Chester's butt issues..and the vet found dried poop in Chester's anal glands/ducts. The vet cleaned him out and showed what he found to me.. and put some medicine in there for Chester and said he had to heal on it's own. But this explained to me why Chester had been hiding and very moody and fussy. The first time I took him to the vet they didn't find anything like that (internalist) and he was even sedated and cleaned... and the second time (different vet from internalist and the 3rd time) they didn't find that... (all of this since May 17th), now I'm almost sure they didn't check him good enough!!!!!!!!! I'm glad I tried a third time.

Help, suggestions appreciated...

Fortiflora is not a very good probiotic and has been known to cause diarrhea in some cats. I would stop giving that. Proviable is not bad, but a lot of us here give a human probiotic (Natural Factors Acidophilus/bifidus double strength).

Probiotics should help, but diet is the most important thing for digestive issues. What does he eat?

He eats prescription gastrointestinal i/d feline food. It's the only one he hasn't puked much on.. and he won't eat any of the grain free dry or wet foods I've tried... several ... and he isn't a pate eater. So this is what he eats... been on it for about 3 months, but diarrhea has been on and off since late last year.. only got even worse since being on the FlortiFlora.

Did the vet OK the human probiotic?

That particular probiotic was recommended by one of our member's holistic vet, but many human probiotics have been used on pets with good effect. Most probiotics marketed for pets are single strain, weak, with questionable ingredients.

It really sounds like your kitty has IBD. Have you ever discussed that possibility with your vet?

Hi there! I answered your PM and agree that the Natural Factors Probiotic is what I would use for your cat. Safe for kitties! Many of us use it here on TCS. I wonder if your thread would be better suited in Nutrition. :dk: I am not sure on the IBD since this just started, I would discuss with your vet first. What diet has Chester been on before the prescription diet? I assume the prescription diet was given due to the recent diarrhea problem. Ask about Hill's W/D as I prefer that over the I/D. Get the canned NOT the dry. W/D WILL solidify Chester's poops and if not, then I would search further as to the culprit by getting an xray, blood work. The impacted anal glands absolutely could cause great pain, stress and depression. Stress can bring on diarrhea too so who know.... now that those glands are cleaned out he may start to feel better.

I am thinking your thread should be in Health first... so I will ask a Mod to move it there as you will receive many more responses there.

Feralvr, this is what suggests IBD to me. The vomiting plus the diarrhea which has been on and off since late last year.
