I'm not sure if this is the right place to post... I recently adopted two kittens (9 weeks). I lost my 18 year old cat last year, he was my everything. I am incredibly nervous about their first vet visit tomorrow. I'm terrified something will be wrong, although they seem perfectly healthy. They've been indoors all their life. (Though their mother was obviously indoor/outdoor.) I'm particularly worried about their FIV/FeLV test. It would be devastating!! I have no reason to believe they have it, but I know that they usually show no symptoms early on. Am I overreacting? Can someone reassure me? I think I just care entirely too much... and it's scary to open your heart to new kitties after losing your childhood pet you were so attached to.

Take a deep breath . . .  let it out . . . .  repeat . . .

The chances of there being something wrong with your kitties is very small, trust the universe that everything is okay.  Then take that trust with you to the vet tomorrow.  As a wise man once said to me - "It doesn't do any good to pre-worry about something that hasn't happened yet."

I hope that helps some - think about all the wonderful things in your life to help you blow the scary thoughts from your mind.

Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

Even if they do have FeLV or FIV it's not a death sentence.  Most kitties can live a long and happy life with a  little bit of  help from their humans.

How did the visit go?

Their visit went really well! They are healthy and their FIV/FeLV test was negative!! Such a relief!!

I think a lot of my anxiety is about bringing a new pet into the home after my beloved childhood pet died last year. It's a big adjustment, and scary to give my heart away again. Anyone else experience feelings like this early on?

I think we all do, especially if we have lost a pet to a specific condition. There are some things, like FIP, where you do have to worry enough to sterilise the environment and wait a while for any contagion to pass before introducing a new cat, but usually it is just an illogical little nagging in the tummy that everything is going to be all right. I am glad your kittens are fine.

Ashley, it's so hard when you lose a much loved pet.  However, I have found that new kitties don't take the place of old kitties, but help us remember the good things about our kitties who've passed.  Your childhood kitty will always be in your heart and these new kitties will worm their way into your heart and you'll form new happy memories.  Soon, you'll wonder what you ever did without them.
