Hi, Everyone--
Just wanted to introduce Smoke, who is about 4 years old, 17 pounds, a solid gray kitty who was once the big kitty on the block before he adopted us at about 1-1/2 years and we had him surgically removed from his combination stud-muffin/enforcer role in the neighborhood. He was named after Tony Stewart, NASCAR driver, whose nickname is Smoke. Our reasoning was that this kitty is mostly sweet, but occasionally cranky and hard to get along with, much like his namesake. So he is just "Smoke," not "Smokey." He's an indoor/outdoor kitty.
It had been more than 20 years since I last had a pet when Smoke came to live with us, but from my recollection of the cats I grew up with, he is not exactly an ordinary cat. He has all his claws, but he doesn't scratch the furniture or walls, no shredded toilet tissue or plants, and he seldom knocks things over. He doesn't like to be held, so he is no lap kitty, and consequently he doesn't knead. He does like a good brushing, but even discussing a B-A-T-H will result in panic for him, pain for us. He only likes seafood flavor crunchy food and snacks and has no interest in chicken, turkey, beef, and especially not liver in his cat food, and he has no interest at all in people food, not even tuna or sardines. He's often ambivalent about playing with toys or a laser pointer, but he's often more interested in playing a kind of combination hide and seek/tag game with my husband.
He's an only pet for me and my husband, who absolutely adores Smoke, and who Smoke really considers his "big cat daddy." Smoke loves me, but not like the Cat Daddy. We think he looks at me more like "the lunch lady" or "that woman who won't open the door" rather than Cat Mama!
