A friend of mine set up a non-fiction Book Club so I felt obliged to support her.

That was a year ago, and I've been pleasantly surprised with how much I've enjoyed it.

It as made me read books I wouldn't normally read, and to learn from other people's points of view.

So today's question is:

Do you, have you or would you belong to a Book Club?

I don't know. My GF is a member of two book clubs and she loves them, for the same reasons that you mentioned. She will talk to me about the different books she is reading. And sometimes I'll grab a book or two on her recommendation. Usually, I like the suggestions.

I'd probably give it a go, just to see what it was like.

I don't think I would like reading books I'm really not interested in so I wouldn't join a book club.

I belonged to one several years ago, but didn't stick with it because most of the books were romance or science fiction/fantasy and definitely not to my taste. Most of the other members weren't interested in the non-fiction I like (history, biographies, true crime).

l belong to a "group" that has a book club, among other things.

They get together once a month at each other's houses and go over certain books.

The premise sounds interesting, but this particular club concentrates on Science Fiction, and there isn't much l dislike more than Science Fiction.

So no, l don't belong to the book club :)

No.  I would read a book then go online to discuss it but feel that is different IMO.

I have always felt that book clubs were exclusive to the Ladies Who Lunch crowd :lol3:. And I am not a Lady Who Lunches :tongue2:. I'm not really comfortable in a group of women, no matter who they are, anyway. I would join an online book club, maybe. So I could choose what kind of books. There are a lot of books I'm just NOT going to read!

I'm wondering if this is more of a cultural thing.  There may be an element of this in Aus, but not that i've struck.  Here libraries promote book clubs and there's a sense of a really good exchange of ideas rather than it just being a social thing.

And one of the things I've found is that I'm enjoying being pushed out of my 'reading comfort zone'.  It makes me read stuff I wouldn't normally, and if I think it's no good, or someone else does, it makes for a very lively discussion!

Also I think that, in my case, being a non-fiction group makes it quite interesting.

I agree with you Mani - here it is about the discussion.  We even have a monthly tv book club show on the ABC (it's an interesting high brow discussion).  And I also like to be pushed beyond my reading comfort zone on occasion...but, I'm not sure I'd be able to commit totally to non-fiction!  AND I'd be choosey who was in the club...you need people who can discuss and think well - or at least around the same level as you.

I tutor academic writing and literature, so I'm frequently pushed beyond my normal reading choices as my students come from all over the world - some I teach via skype - and from different schools.  I often HATE things I have to read, but then I can enjoy working out WHY i hate it and what I'm reacting to.  As I teach my students, a strong reaction is usually telling you about your values...and this is something they will get examined on, and need to be able to construct an argument around.

I think I would consider it. :).

We tried to get a book club going here on TCS, but it didn't go very well. :lol3:
