My cat was diagnosed with fip several months ago. Just recently he was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I am giving him the meds but he is still losing weight and his ears have dried out so much they feel almost crunchy. Also losing a lot of hair. I asked my vet if we should up the dose but he wants to wait. Today he started eating sand. I feel they are symptoms from the thyroid but my vets thinks it coils also be the fip. He must have the dry type because he has never had fluid in his stomach or cheat. Has anyone had anything like this with their cat?

Awww...... :hugs: :heart2:

Has blood work been done recently? The sand eating may be because he's become anemic. Cats can have or develop PICA for many reasons; but eating litter or sand is very common when they're anemic.

I don't know where you live, but if your kitty is not improving under your vet's care, I personally wouldn't (and haven't) hesitate(d) to get a second opinion from a vet at another practice. :rub: In fact, if you're in the U.S., I'd search to see if there is a Vet (a D.V.M.) additionally trained in Chinese Medicine so that you have a wider range of treatment options here: http://www.ahvma.org

Many vibes for you and your boy. :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Oh - it's also possible the FIP is an incorrect diagnosis. There's no "test" for FIP. It is a diagnosis of symptoms and exclusion, basically.

I have an appointment next week to have blood work repeated. For one, I don't think the dosage on the thyroid is right. I have another cat on thyroid meds who has done great. He was so bad they did not think he was going to make it and Taz, the one with fip had thyroid values twice as high as my first cat yet is on the same dose. Taz looks awful, yet plays, eats, grooms. But is just skinny with awful looking ears and really thinning hair.

Ok.... Turns out my cat cannot take the thyroid medicine. Only 2.3 % of cats can't take this medicine. We are going to try the y/d food out by science diet for thyroid problems. This is the only option. My vets does not suggest the radiation or surgery for him. Only problem is that the cats is only to eat this food. Yeah, right!!!! How do you do this with a multiple cat household?

Had to put one of my other kitty's down this morning. As many times as I have done this, it is still very hard. She had kidney failure. I took care of her until I knew it was time. Cried like a baby. It is so hard to take to make the decision to end their little lives.
