How much to feed?

I posted on here before about my cat's diarrhea and got so much wonderful advice.  Thanks to all of you she has become a healthy and happy cat.  She eats hound and gatos with boiled chicken I prepare, all mixed together with water.  Her serious stomach problems are almost completely gone.  But...I have been feeding her every 4-5 hours.  This means that I never get enough sleep and my whole life revolves around my cat.  I read an article posted on here about getting cats to sleep and it recommended feeding twice a day. I would like to start working towards 2 servings a day.

I just don't know how much overall to feed her.  She is about 7 pounds.  Is a 5.5 can about right?  I was thinking I could fill a 5.5 can with wet food and chicken and then divide it up.  I've been inconsistent with the amount I've been giving her, but I need to get it under control.

My oldest cat, Silly is about 7 pounds and she eats between 6 and 7 ounces of wet food a day. She is not that active, so this seems to be the amount that keeps her sleek and happy. Depending on how much your cat weighs, I would give the same 6-7 ounces a day. Of course it depends on the calorie content of the food and how active she is.

Start by feeding her 4 times a day, then gradually cut back to 3.  With her stomach problems, you don't want her to go too long between meals. Her stomach acid levels will get too high and cause the diarrhea and stomach upset. I have the same problem with me.

I wanted to pass along something a Vet told me. She stated that feeding guidelines which appear on catfood labels is for an unaltered animal unless otherwise noted. Unaltered cats burn more calories. So keep that in consideration when you're trying to determine your cats activity level.
