I have my female in heat and I would like to mate her. For how many days should I leave her with the male to increase the chance of getting pregnant?

Hello! :wavey:

I don't have the answer for you as I am not a Breeder, but you are breeding purebred Sphynx? Is it possible to check with the breeder you bought your queen from?

Have you arranged for a stud? If not, and your queen is already in heat now, how are you going to select a stud, check his pedigree for compatibility with your queen's pedigree, arrange terms with stud's owner - fee in money, pick of litter, or ? and do all this before your queen goes out of heat. If your queen is not a pure bred, registered pedigree cat that you show why are you planning to breed her?

I own girls and boys so I don't need a stud from anyone else and my cats are registered and with full pedigrees.

Now, the first question is to be fairly sure they do mate.  Sometimes they dont do mate, by several different reasons.

One of them is btw, cats living together often dont "ignite" on each other. It is of course no safe preventive method, but with them both of the same breed it is perhaps no big deal. If they happen to mate, and get kittens, you can register them and sell anyway. Even if you planned for a different stud for her pregnancy.

If such a breeder WANTS them to mate, the trick is to have them together in a mating room,  different  from their normal living milieu . So they recognize there is something especial going on, it is supposed they shall do something extra.   :)

When you think they had mated, have them at most 3 days together.   You want to be sure, but you dont want to risk kittens are done at different occasions.

If you are practically sure they hadnt mated, you can have them togehter longher time, if they are pals with each other.

Now, this here recommendation is if say, the female is visiting the stud.  You dont want to make a new journey if the mating hasnt taken.  Lots of extra work both for the studs owner and for the queens owner.

YOU are owning them both, so it is not so much extra work to arrange things, if the first mating wasnt fruitful.  I say, look see if they mated 2-3 times, its enough.

Most moggies do it perhaps just once, and its enough.  Typically they happen to get out 15 minutes, and 9 weeks later we have here 5 gorgious small kittens.

Of course, these who went out,  and there wasnt no practical result we never hear about. "health hold her mouth shut"  as the proverb says.

Last but not least. How do you know if they mated?  Sometimes you see it. Other times you hear the queen scream when they mate, or the male fleeing for his life!. Esp at the first mating.  After it she is more quaiet.  After a successfull mating she usually rolls around like in pain. I dont think she is in real pain, as she doesnt wants to be helped or curled with.

If they were so so - the male is often beleguering the female, she hisses and strikes with her paw, its part of the courting play - and suddenly they got very friendly = sure sign they had mated....  :)

Good luck!

Wow Stefan. I guess you're an expert.

They started mating yesterday so I will let them be together until tomorrow.

For the boy it's his first time but for the girl the third. She already had 2 litters sired the the same boy but she only had 1 kitten in each litter. My vet told me that if she gets pregnant at the end of her heat cycle it is something normal to have only 1 so this time as soon as I saw her in heat I let my boy mate with her.

We'll see how it goes.

I also have a neutered boy trying to mate with her:)

If you are sure they mated more than once, you dont need to overdo this. You can skip this tomorrow third day.

Why the three days is so common is because the owner of the visiting lady lives perhaps 5 hours driving away, so he leaves her in the studs home, and comes back when they are hopefully ready.

But if the owner is staying nearby at a hotell, and we see they have done what they should, they dont need to be together all 3 days...

Of course, if the stud is otherwise alone cat, and they are friendly with each other ( they usually do, if not before so after the first mating!), so it is only nice to have this visiting lady.

Yeah, my residents are two ex studs...  :)

Our studs were friendly with their ladies, always afterways, but usually also before.   Knew how to court, and how to belegeure in a nice way with more reluctant ladies.

If they werent friendly, we wouldnt prob not wanted them to be studs.

A dominating male who just takes what he wants even if the female isnt willing yet, isnt pleasant to see.

Sorry for the lenghy post. Old memories arise!

Good luck!
