Hi! My female kitten is 12 weeks old today. I have a question about heat & fertility. Everyone (including the vet) told me to get her fixed around 4-5 months at the earliest because she can not have kittens til about 5-6 months. I have 2 adult males & 2 males. (One age estimated at 14-15 weeks & the other was said to be 8 weeks though i think they lied because he & his siblings are SMALL & he should be 11 weeks today & he's still tiny compared to the older 2) anyway, mooch (adult male) likes to groom Katsumi. Should i be worried he'll knock her up? She shows no signs of heat merely wants to play eat & be groomed.

Cats can go into heat at 4 months.  (One of mine did, Mooch.  Noodles, her litter mate, did not.)  It may depend on the vet; but I always hear it on here that they can be spayed at 2lb.

An over eager high strung male can try to mate a kitten too, female or male, thinking this is an unusual small lady.  As he didnt do it, he is apparently not one of these.

Him being naturally good friend with her, and protective too, lessens the risk for him being sexually interested in her, even when she becomes teenager and goes into heat.   Of course, it is no safe preventive method.

Breeders who have females and males of the same breed do sometimes risk the situation. As their experience is cats living together often arent interested in each other sexually.  IF they do mate, this is no catastrophe for them: they can register and sell the litter anyway.  If the breeder wants them to mate for real, their trick is to have in them in a mating room, so both recognizes something especial is going on, they are supposed to do something extra here...   :)

But others have other experiences, so dont hang yourself on this hope!!!

Anyway, dont take any risks.  Spay her as soon you reasonably can. At latest at the 4 months.  If the vet  swears his honor, God and the vet association forbids him to spay so early, do it at 5 months, telling a white lie she has began to come into heat.

OR change vet.  If he is a good vet otherwise, change vet just for the spaying.

Good luck!

Thanks :) she grooms my smallest. And her & Aiko groom eachother. She likes the attention. But Mooch will pin her down & even nip to groom her

The easiest is of course, you begin with neutering Mooch. Problem solved, and you are doing a service too Mooch too.   :)

For males it is prob roughly the same recommendation in age. They seldom gets sexually mature nor active before 6 months, but best not to swear on it.  Not so few train bumps even if they probably arent mature.

Quite a few are mature shortly thereafter, at perhaps 8 months.  And thus - may be active, at least, if the female is willing.

The earliest is as always, over 2 pounds / 1 kilo, and good health.

The earliest I've heard of a kitten going into heat is 14 weeks (there was a breeder here who had a girl call at that age). The earliest I've had a girl go into heat was 16 weeks, and this seems fairly common. Having a full tomcat around will affect her hormones and possibly make her go into heat earlier (when my girl went into heat at 16 weeks, I had a feral tom in my spare bathroom waiting for his TNR appointment). The adult male should be neutered ASAP regardless (you are so lucky he doesn't spray yet! He most likely will start if she goes into heat, though), but she should definitely be spayed in the next 2 weeks for her own health and safety.

Thanks! I'm trying to find a cheaper spay clinic so it doesn't break the bank. Mooch &Meow act like fixed cats. Both are fat & lazy. I almost wonder if they are fixed. They were obviously well taken care of cats that got lost (my friend found them in his subdivision after some people moved) so idk if they are in fact fixed or how to even tell. They sleep all day, play very little, & chubby. They show no interest in our pregnant cat other than wanting to groom her (and she chases them & my kittens away)

Ah, they probably are fixed then. It's fairly easy to tell with males---if they have large noticable testicles under their tails, they aren't fixed :D. Plus tomcats fight and spray and smell bad. If their urine doesn't make your eyes water, they most likely are neutered already. It wouldn't hurt to take them in for a checkup and have the vet confirm. But if you know what cat testicles look like. . .oh, hey, let me see if I can find a picture for you.

Here's some booty shots of intact males: https://www.google.com/search?clien...6w&biw=640&bih=283&sei=2PCvUcn5HOiayAGr34CQCg (if that doesn't work, because I'm on my phone and it might not link right, just search for "cat testicles" on Google Images)
I can't find any good pictures of a neutered male's back end, but, well, they don't have those :lol3:.

I feel so dirty posting this but:
Thats Mooch
thats Meow
Them together.

They are BIG cats. But no manly cat odor etc. Mooch is the bigger one (about 15 pounds) Meow is the smaller tabby (11-13 pounds). He has always been tinier. They don't smell or anything. They just lay in bed & sleep. When they lived outside at Zac's mom's house there were 3 female cats. They never mated with them. Just chased them away from the food bowl. (The females were strays). Zacs parents said they were always on the porch, in the window, or on the roof asleep. They got up to eat, be petted by the kids, or to roll around by the door so the kids would let them in...

sometimes it is not easy to see. The modern neutering is by a little incision, taking out the most important. The sacks are left, just a little smaller than before.  They tend to be smaller and smaller with time, but somebody who havent seen a fully grown tom, and now sees this late neutered male with sacs, may get unsure.  My oldest resident, ex stud, has still some sacks and a quite masculine appareance 10 years after, for example.  His son, also ex stud, his sacks are almost gone now...

The big sacks is one sign, the smelly urine another. Even if he is one not spraying, the urine of an intact male is quite more smelly than otherwise.

You CAN also show him an adult female in heat...  Preferably a female know for quite heat.   :)

You can perhaps make a check up with a vet?  Someone who dont charge 50 bucks as soon as you just stepinside and say hallo doc!   A quick and for them easy examination, and you know what to plan for....

Good luck!

Well, Mooch certainly has all his bits! Meow isn't quite so well-endowed but it looks like he does too. It's amazing they don't act like toms, for sure. But do keep them away from fertile females. At some point biological imperative will kick in ;).
