Some issues with dry food and the switch to wet

Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone here can give me some guidance or ideas in how to proceed with transitioning my cat to wet food. Also this may be a bit long so please bear with me.

Shadow, who is ten years old, has been having loose stool off and on since the end of February. Initially we took him to see the vet because he kept obsessively licking the area around his anal opening and he ended up having his glands expressed and they gave us some medicine to help with the loose stool that had recently developed. It helped him while he as on it but after the treatment the loose stool returned about a week later. After another visit the vet did blood work and a fecal test, but nothing out of the ordinary showed up. I was given Fortiflora and powdered vitamins to put in his food and told to try switching him to a sensitive stomach dry food to see if that would help. The Fortiflora and vitamins didn't seem to help much if at all.

I changed his food from Purina Cat Chow to Blue Buffalo Sensitive Stomach Adult Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe and this seems to have helped somewhat. Where before every bowel movement he had was a combination of soft/runny/loose he can now go two, maybe three days before having issues again. Then there are times where it will be random. He'll have one that's runny and be normal again after. However, when he's "normal" he sounds like he's straining when he goes. He does not have the use of his tail however (he's never been able to flex it or anything), so I don't know if that would cause him to strain or not.

Since the food switch, he has had more hair balls lately and has thrown up a few times as well. He's also developed gas.

I've been wondering if I should switch to a different kibble (something grain free, maybe?) to see if this helps as I'm not sure if this is the food or the underlying cause of the loose stool. Aside from that, he's been acting like himself, eating and playing normally.

Still, I would prefer to get him on all canned so for the past few months I would periodically give him shredded Friskies with crushed kibble on top in between his dry food meals. This progressed to the point where he would lick the gravy off and maybe eat a bit of the meat with out kibble on top. Good progress considering he had never eaten anything other then kibble and the occasional Pounce treat. He's always hated “human food”. I then switched to pate style canned food since he would only lick the gravy off the Friskies and leave all the meat. Since doing this he will sometimes, if I leave it out between meals, eat small portions of the canned food. I've tried a couple of times to replace one of his meals with a meal of canned and he would only lick it for about a minute then “bury” it and leave it there until his next dry food meal.

It's a bit confusing for me because I know he's capable of eating the canned he just won't eat it consistently. When he does eat it he'll leave it there for hours before doing so. There is only one exception where I put the food down and he began eating it right away, and I think it was a fluke as he hasn't done it since.

I've tried the Fortiflora, crushing his kibble and his favorite treats and sprinkling them on top and he doesn't seem to care for this. I'm uncertain what else to try sticking on it at this point since he doesn't care much for anything.

The interesting thing is that I bought some chunky canned food and was able to feed pieces to him individually. If I put them on his saucer or his placemat he proceeds to lick them for a bit, “bury” them, then leave them to get hard.

I understand that this will take time and a great deal of patience since he's been a kibble addict for so long. I guess I'm just uncertain if there is something that I should be doing that I'm not.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a vet, but he sounds like he might have IBD. Check this link and see if any symptoms apply. http://ibdkitties.net/LivingwithIBD.html

If so, you might want to talk to your vet about this possibility and hopefully other members who have more experience with this will post as well.

But I do know diet is a big factor. Now, do you leave dry down all the time? If so, you have to first establish a regular feeding schedule. Your kitty will not transition to wet, if dry is available all the time. I am sooo happy you want him to eat a wet diet. I would also go grain free, but watch for grain free's that contain potato and peas and avoid those. You might want to consider going to a raw diet eventually also. Many of our members here with kitties who have IBD have found it to work best for them. But lets get him on wet first.

Here are some helpful links:

Hope this helps.

Sometimes it's a matter of finding a wet food that they really like, as well as making sure they are, indeed, hungry.  As Katluver said, if they have access to dry, there is no incentive to eat the wet, although it kind of sounds like you do NOT free feed, since you have mentioned "meal time".  When I transitioned mine over to wet, I bought probably 50 different cans, different brands, different textures, different flavors, until I finally stumbled on something they liked.  In my case, ALL of my little ones liked  Soulistic (Petco's brand), and, luckily, they liked most of the flavors!  (AND it's grain free!)  AND inexpensive

I don't think I ever used their old kibble as a topper, but DID use Fortiflora.  Two of mine love it, one hates it, which I learned very quickly
.  But the one who hates it absolutely LOVES Wholelife freeze dried chicken, which powders up nicely and makes a perfect topper too.  Now that I feed raw I have a cupboard full of things to use as toppers.  Wholelife freeze dried chicken, beef, chicken livers, cod, salmon, turkey.  Bonito flakes, Purebites freeze dried chicken (apparently it has a slightly different taste from Wholelife
), yet another brand of freeze dried chicken livers, and more!  All my cats love ALL of these as toppers

Do check out the link Katluver provided on tips for transitioning, as there may be something useful in there for you.

Also, are your giving Shadow a good probiotic?  I know you were given Fortiflora to give him, which IS a probiotic, but really isn't all that good.  It's a single strain.  Lots of us here give our cats the same ones WE take.  Here is what we use in our household and I know several others here use it too:     I give each of our cats 1 capsule per day, split between two meals.  Just open the capsule and mix into their food.  (works best mixed into wet food, naturally

Good luck.  Even the more die hard kibble addict CAN be converted.  Just takes patience.

Katluver4life –

That it might be IBD is actually something the vet mentioned, she said that surgery was likely to be the only way to find out for sure. She didn't go into greater than that, but I'll see about talking to her about it.

Mrsgreenjeens – He isn't currently on a probiotic so I'll look into giving him some of mine once he's eating a bit more wet food to see how this helps. When I was giving him the Fortiflora it fell to the bottom of his bowl most of the time so I'm not sure how much of it he was actually getting.

I moved him to scheduled meals at the beginning of May. Well, a more strict schedule, as in April I began picking his bowl up through out the day so it wasn't always down. He eats three times a day, 8 am, 4 pm and 10pm. I leave his bowl down for 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on how long it takes him to eat. Sometimes, if we're both up late, he'll get a fourth meal but not always. I measure out ½ cup each day but he eats 1/3 cup to 3/8 cups total. Is three meals a day too many? I've seen different sources say that he he should only be eating twice a day during transition.

Thank you for pointing me to the Catinfo links. I've actually read through them before but will need to go through them again to see if there is something else that I can try.

Where exactly does one find Bonito flakes? I've seen some of the freeze dried meats at the pet stores around town but no Bonito flakes. Or maybe I just don't know what I looking for. This is one of the things I haven't tired yet, along with the freeze dried meats.

I guess at this point I'll keep trying different foods. I gave him a few pieces of boiled chicken as a treat yesterday which he seemed fairly happy about. He wouldn't eat them off the plate though. If I feed him on the carpet he'll eat them. The only problem with this is that he's never been able to see well so I practically had to shove his face into the chicken for him to see it and eat it. Maybe I need to try a different plate?

Well, at least I know he'll eat non-kibble foods some of the time so he can't be completely opposed to it just yet. I started keeping a list of the canned food I've given him to keep tract. Hopefully I'll find something soon that he likes best

Most pet food stores sell Bonita Flakes, but they are cheaper at a chinese market, if you have one of those handy
