My cat has a severe infection of ringworm. My family is trying to tell me I should put her down. I am horrified at the thought.

She has to be bathed every 2 days with medicated shampoo. She looks so miserable, her ears and face and neck are bloody, and it's in her feet and tail as well.

what are your experiences with ringworm? I need some support :(

Ring worm is a fungus and it takes a long time to get rid of. Doing rescue I had the plessure to have RW going through my house more then once. I never had a cat with such a severe case but it's not a reason to put a cat to sleep, far from that. Talked to your Vet and ask for some oral meds. Please do not put this baby to sleep because of Ring worm.

Desirai, please don't even consider having your girl put down.

I once had a cat with ringworm and did all the bathing etc..   I knew that she understood it was necessary and she put up with it bravely and when it was cleared she was such a loving, happy girl.  I bathed her daily along with all her bedding.

However this isn't my area.  There are really knowledgeable people here who can give you good advice on how to nurse your baby back to health and they should be along soon

And in the meantime, here's a great thread on it, although unfortunately the link to the article in point No.2 is broken:

In a case this bad, you might want to ask the vet for the oral treatment.

I could never, ever put my darling to sleep. That is MURDER.. I am so horrified that my family even suggested it.

But I have NO experience with ringworm either. I'm going to keep bathing her like the vet told me to. Luckily my baby takes baths very well.

How easily is ringworm spread from cats to humans?

Yes, ringworm is highly contagious but easily treatable (like athletes foot) if you find yourself also infected. Ringworm is NOT a reason for euthanizing a cat. I'm sorry your family said something like that to you.

Mani's link is excellent and tells how best to prevent it from spreading. Always use gloves when handling your baby. Good luck and keep us posted.

Ringworm is a pretty harmless nuisance, certainly doesn't warrant euthanasia. I have a young kitty with ringworm at the moment, although it hadn't spread much before the vet put him on oral meds. I would definitely recommend the oral meds because it prevents new spots from breaking out and reduces the spread of the spores. Keep giving the baths too. My vet gave me no more advice than wash my hands after touching Jasper. I haven't been doing any extra cleaning, except buy some anti-fungal laundry liquid, wash fabrics a bit more often and some extra vacuuming. I also bought some veterinary disinfectant to spray the house with but haven't done that yet. I have been playing with and cuddling Jasper for four weeks and I haven't got ringworm yet. Jasper had one new spot appear but it cleared up in a day with his meds. I am worried about it returning when the meds finish but the vet reckons the kittens immune system gets strong enough to fight it. The vet also said healthy adults are not highly likely to get it. It's very easy to treat if you do get it anyway. It's probably a good idea to keep his bedding clean and any spaces where he likes to hang out. You might need to go to extra lengths cleaning if you have other pets or children around. Bottom line, don't let something as annoying but harmless as ringworm stop you from enjoying your kitty.
