Hello, all.

We are in the process of adopting 3 kitten siblings. They are about 7 weeks old at present and we are just waiting until we get the ok that they are ready to come home. So this is REALLY from scratch.

We have always had 2 cats and a Dalmatian. (our cats have lived to 18 ...except one...and our dogs until 14+ yrs)

Two weeks ago the last of our beloved pets (Dalmatian) crossed the rainbow Bridge at almost 15 yrs. A year ago we said goodbye to our 18yr old cat Emmi. Several years before our beautiful Tortie passed at age 12 from a lung mass.

So we are "patiently" waiting for our kittens to come to their forever home. The waiting is very hard as the house is SO empty. But we have prepared the house for a big change in energy and they will have a charmed life when they arrive.

They were rescued by one of our local shelters and when the Momma cat could not feed them due to a mastitis they were hand raised. Our own Vet is also the shelter volunteer Vet so as Fate and Destiny would have it...when we said goodbye to our dog and I put out the call to adopt 2 kittens...Fate brought us 3!

We could not leave one behind! so instead of getting another puppy which we feel is just out of the question for us now...we are totally thrilled and committed to giving our 3 newest family members the best life ever.

I have been online researching all things KITTEN and found my way here. One of the first things I have interested in reading about it NUTRITION.

For almost 15 yrs I  fed raw & home cooked for our dog. Our cats I always fed commercial foods. I never felt I knew enough about cat nutrition to take on home made for cats.

I have come across some info on the web about Life's Abundance brand, and Wysong Raw, ...many years ago I fed our cats Wysong...but that was before their Raw line.

Now I am curious to read here what ACTUAL people are actually feeding.

Starting with new kittens I have a chance to start them off right. I have read about the need to feed WET FOOD as the prime food and I will appreciate any input anyone has to offer to consider what is best.

If putting money into great nutrition keeps them healthy and out of the Vet's office for anything other than wellness checks etc. that would be worth it to me. It has been about 20 yrs since kittens have come into our lives. A LOT has changed.

This is going to be quite an adventure. :)

Glad to be here

What a beautiful introduction.  Welcome to TCS!  I look forward to hearing more about your crew.  I think it is wonderful that you are adopting all three.  I'm very sorry to hear about your dog.  What a fitting tribute to take in these kittens who need you.

Welcome to the site! :wavey:

Very exciting to be getting 3 kittens! They are going to be so much fun. As far as learning about nutrition there is a ton of info in that forum. Also there is a sub forum for raw feeding, there is tons of info and people willing to help you if you wanted to feed your kittens raw.

Thanks so much for the welcome. We will be naming them when we get them home. Right now they are the Gang of Three. LOL.

Going to see what food they are coming to me with and then make the adjustments. I like that Life's Abundance site. The wet food looks good but will definitely do more investigation as we go along.

They are so brand new...we feel like novices after all this time.

Since our Emmi cat has been gone that Cat Energy has been so missed. With Lizzie our Dalmatian being the age she was we knew we had to wait to start over giving her all our attention and love. No regrets...when we commit...we go all in!

We are ready for the adventure of the kittens and the start of a new era.

Welcome to TCS

Wow, 3 kittens! How exciting for you!

So glad your researching on diet! Yes, a wet food diet is better then any dry food, BUT raw is best. Cats are carnivores!

I have been transitioning my 3 to raw, (they are all between 1yr - 2yrs) and I encourage you to go this route, since you said you fed your dog this way. It can actually be cheaper and certainly is healthier for them. Starting them off as kittens would make it a breeze! Here is our raw feeding resource link: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/240809/raw-feeding-resource-thread . And of course there is a sub forum in the nutrition section on raw feeding.

I will tell you why I finally made this switch. Mostly from what I read here on this site and on this one: http://www.catinfo.org/

Also due to the continued longer list of recalls  and ingredients in canned foods that are just not good for cats. Honestly..I got a headache every time I went food shopping for them. Reading labels, researching online..arrrgh! lol

Raw, simple, meat/bones/organs,easy supplements, no more guess work. whew..what a relief. There are a ton of commercial raw complete foods available now also. This made it easier for me to start feeding it. Bravo, Primal, Rad Cat, Natures Variety are just a few.

Good luck with your new family.
