I'm taking a public speaking class this summer and we are currently doing our "informative" speeches.  I am planning to do my speech on TNR programs and their benefits to the community.

I've found a lot of good resources on TCS and am looking for a few more, particularly scholarly or published resources.  Any ideas?

I'm excited!  I hope I can inspire at least one person to get involved with TNR in their community.  Oops, I am supposed to be informing, not persuading... oh well

How wonderful! Hope you do influence someone. I'm sure you will. Ondine has given you the link for Alley Cats. They have an extensive library of scientific studies on how TNR works and why. Many articles you can download in PDF. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

And maybe you can also do a show-and-tell:  bring with you a cat who has been TNRd and socialized and AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE ADOPTION :)

Kidding, kind of:  some people might have allergies or the school a policy against bringing in animals.

A little influential informative persuasion..... ;), would be my approach! I think talking about the harsh, dangerous, cruel and lonely life of feral cats/kittens will persuade them enough to at least begin to think about what to do when they see a stray/feral cat. Really makes me happy to hear that you are doing this speech! :D :happy3: Great job, hun.:clap::clap::clap::clap:

Thanks everyone!  I looked at the alleycat.org website and it looks great, I will definitely be using some of that material in my speech (citing the website appropriately, of course!).  I actually thought of bringing in a trap but I don't actually have one, lol, so I will put together a very brief PowerPoint to accompany the speech.  I took a survey of my classmates and only 2 out of 22 have ever heard of TNR, so I am so excited to give this speech and show how TNR can benefit the community.  Thank you!!!

How'd your speech go?
Hey there!  So sorry I didn't update this thread, lol.  My speech went really well and even though more than half the class had indicated they didn't like cats (I took a survey the class before), everyone responded really well to the speech and some have said that they will donate money to local programs!

We did have a Q&A session and a classmate said, "Why don't you just kill them all?" even though I addressed that (the "vacuum" effect) in my speech, and we kind of had a back and forth, but I think I eventually got my point across.

Overall, I thought it was great!  And Alley Cat Allies was an awesome resource.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you might have opened a few closed minds. That's all we can do - spread the word and try to stop the ignorance. Good job!
