Happy Sunday!

When I was a kid we used to go to the beach every summer for our vacation. I LOVED it! I would swim all day and go to the boardwalk at night and ride the rollercoasters. We went snorkeling, boat rides, jet skis, fishing and everything else beachy. My relatives had houses at the same beach so we would always have a family reunion 4th of July picnic. I miss those days.

These days I take a stay-cation. The family I am a nanny for has a pool. When they go away on their vacation I have the pool to myself for 2 weeks. It is so relaxing to just swim and read all day. Very peaceful.

How do you spend your vacation time?

I live on an island off the coast of GA so I get to the beach some. I do stay-cations as well since I'm a broke nursing student.

Gee I remember as a kid going to the Jersey Shore with my parents, my Dad would rent a bungalo (sp) for a week and my Aunt and Cousin would be there also and of course  my Mom.  We had so much fun, I'm sure glad the Jersey Shore is now up and running for the most part since Super Storm Sandy hit us.

Now I haven't been on a vacation in years, I do however go to the Jersey Shore since my SO has a home down there, we go there quite often during the summer on weekends and sometimes longer.  I guess staying there for a week is like a vacation.  Other than that, I have not traveled at all.

The other nice thing about a stay-cation is not having to leave the kitties

Hi LaRussa. I see you are from New Jersey. We always went to Strathmere beach in NJ. Near Ocean City. Where do you go?

We usually spend a week or two a year in Hungary, near the Austrian border. There are hot springs, and my in-laws bought a small house there about 20 years ago.

I try to take one trip a year with a tour group to learn something new.  This year I saw Mayan ruins in Guatemala.  Last year it was a culinary tour of Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Hubby's not interested in things like that so stays home to take care of kitties.

Then we usually get away together, too.  This summer we're going up to a little cabin we have in northern California to spend a few quiet days.

I have only done urban vacations the last few years. My last trips have been to NYC, DC, and Seattle. I do like the beach and all but there are so many other places I want to go. We really like visiting museums on vacation.

My Grandparents and Great-Aunt & Uncle co-owned a camp in the mountains.  We would have that place loaded with people sometimes between all the cousins and what not.  It was always sooo much fun!  Swimming in the lake, sometimes boat rides, traipsing through the woods, picking berries, hiking, going "to town" for ice cream or to visit the souvenir store that had THE BEST sparklers ever.  Even taking the trash to the dump was an adventure because you might see a bear (I never did).  We'd go visit the deer that frequented this one road (and more that would just walk across the property). There was also a water park nearby we'd go to.  I still love water slides but you won't get me on a roller coaster often!  Simple, good times!!

Back then we went to Keansburg every year.  Now Russ and I go to his summer home in Avalon, not far from Wildwood.  I still enjoy walking the boardwalk and stopping in the wide open bars at night.  I have always loved the Jersey Shore, it's still fun for me. Of course all that food is great too

Rick and I used to spend our vacations riding the roller coasters at various amusement parks. We loved Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion in Virginia. We went to Six Flags in Jersey quite a bit, too. Out to Kings Island in Ohio for the coasters out there. Those were pretty much the only rides, although we'd do some of the water rides from time to time. But primarily it was coasters and more coasters; we'd spend the day going from one coaster to the next to the next and back again.

I don't get a lot of vacation time anymore, so I mainly go with Rick when he has union business that we can drive to. Chicago, Wisconsin, etc. At the beginning of August, he'll be going to Wisconsin and I'll be going with him then.

We have some one-day things planned with our grandchildren for this summer: Baltimore Aquarium, Crayola Factory, Philadelphia Zoo, things like that. They're not really old enough yet for the large roller coasters. But when they are, I hope they like them as much as we do!

Six Flags in NJ was one of my favorites growing up. I LOVED Rolling Thunder, the big wooden coaster. We would make a trip very late in the season when there were no lines to wait in and ride that coaster over and over.

I need NOT to be snarky.  And I'm trying.

We chose to live where we did.  Dh got assigned to his first ship out here, and we stayed after he left the Navy b/c 1) the shipyard gave him a job and they've been really good to him 2) we had a house in the area and 3) I love the school system here, I have 1 already through it and the other child will graduate in 2 years.

That being said- hubby's family drives me NUTS.  When the kids were little- the ONLY vacations we took were to the inlaws in Indiana, and my family in SC.  Drove me nuts.  I can count on one hand the amount of times his family has been out here to see us, and we have been here 22 YEARS.  It used to really, really annoy me, because both my sister in laws would go on vacations with family- and here we were spending vacation sitting at the inlaws house with 2 very bored kids and dh would sit and play on the dang computer all day.

After numerous arguments about this- dh and I came to an agreement.  And it's been better. Since family was going to be a pain and not visit (then whine about not seeing us) we'd try to do a visit to each place every 18 months.  That way we could still do a "vacation" as a family.

We've gone to Disney World with the girls twice.  They've been up to New England twice (I had family up there, the only family left is 2 uncles and an aunt
) My mil ( I do love her dearly- the family just drives me bonkers) took the girls to Europe 3 years ago (and they had a BLAST).  Dh and I went to Vegas for our 20th anniversary.  A place that I'm glad I saw, but have no burning desire to return to

Can't go anywhere this year.  Dh is really busy at work so a vacation this year just isn't going to happen.  We broke down 3 years ago and got season passes to the local (like an hour away) amusement park/ water park in the area.  And that's fun.  We live 40 minutes from the beach, I know where all the "non-tourist spots" are.

The Big Bad Wolf was taken down? No, I didn't know that. At Busch Gardens? Wasn't that the coasters that rode under the rails? What about Loch Ness or was that one at Kings Dominion? Did they take that one down, too? I really liked Loch Ness, probably because it was one of our first bigger coaster rides. BG had one called the Drachen Fire. That one was bad. I could only ride it one time and then I'd have to bag it for awhile. Usually once we rode a coaster 2-3 times, we could pretty much figure out when the bad jerks were going to be and we could prepare for them. But with the Drachen Fire, no matter how much we tried, it was too much and I always walked off that thing with bad neck and head pain....one time, we saw a girl exit the ride and sit on the ground with her head in her hands. She was crying from the pain. They took that one quite a while ago, after only a few years.

I just loved Rolling Thunder, too, at Six Flags. Wasn't there one called the Rebel Yell there? I have a tendency to get my coasters mixed-up sometimes. Kings Island had a wonderful wooden coaster; I think it was called the Grizzly, something like that. Nice ride. We managed to get back to that ride during the last hour of the park being open and we were able to stay on the coasters for quite a few loops. It was pretty cool because we were riding the coaster while they were setting the fireworks off.

We live about 1.5 hours away from Hershey Park in PA. My DIL used to work there, so we could get free tickets, although we didn't take advantage of her generosity too often. There are a few nice coasters at Hershey, too.

It's been years since we've been to an amusement part. With my back the way it is now, I'm almost afraid to ride a coaster. And I know that, if we went, I'd try it.

Big Bad Wolf was the suspended roller coaster.  That was taken down 2 years ago for the new one Verbolten.  Which is really quite cool.  I like it and so does dh.

I had to check.  Loch Ness is still there.  Drachen Fire was taken down when they built Griffon several years ago.

The only other coaster I will go on (besides Verbolten) is Alpengeist.  I don't like the huge drops at first, and that one really doesn't have any.

We've been by Kings Dominion.  That one is kind of far away for us.  Dd went with a bunch of friends from college right before school let out for the summer.  It was really cheap- $10 for admission! and that included the ride from campus and back (an hour and a half ish from her school).
