Hey guys!

So my little Khaleesi has been really going at her ears since I brought her home. She scratching at one and I notice that when we're cuddling, one of her ears is always flat or in some weird position, usually followed by her scratching at it. I'm assuming she has ear mites :( Although her ears look very clean...

I'm about to be in Atlanta for work for a week (don't worry, I have a roommate) so I don't have them going to the vet until the 9th to get all their shots and whatnot.

Is there anything that I can do at home to help relieve her from the irritation? I don't want them getting any worse.

Thanks!

Swabbing their ears out with olive oil is supposed to help-- supposedly "suffocates" the mites.  I've used a q-tip dipped in a tiny bit of olive oil to clean my guys' ears out before (very careful not to go too far in, though).  I think there are OTC ear mite remedies, but I'm sort of scared of the pesticide-type ingredients in some OTC stuff.  Revolution seemed to take care of the ear mites when I first got my cats, but you probably can't get that until you take them to the vet.

I just wanted to add-- I LOVE the name Khaleesi.   One of my little guys has a Game of Thrones name, too-- Aerys.  If I had gotten a girl, I was planning to name her Daenerys.

Thank you for the response! I might try the olive oil then. Also, I had put Advantage kitten on her because our other kitten, who we got a few days prior to getting Khaleesi, had fleas and I was freaking out. Would that have done the same as the Revolution?

And thank you for the name compliment. I figured considering Khaleesi means "queen" and female cats are referred to as queens, it fit well :) Love your name too!

Hmm...best I can tell, Advantage only treats fleas?  Revolution treats fleas, hookworms, roundworms, ear mites, and prevents heartworms.

yes, Advantage does not treat ear mites. Olive oil is a good temporary solution - if you can use the large Q-tips that you can get from t he pharmacy you are less likely to damage the ear. Or just a twist of cotton wool is safer.

Does it need to be applied every day or just once?

Thanks for the help!

Your kitty might have a yeast infection.  I'd have your roomie keep a close watch on the ear scratching.  If it gets worse, will your roomie take the kitty to the vet for a check of the ears?
