I have had him since he was 8 weeks old and he has been plagued with Asthma, UTI's and diabetes.  Came home yesterday and found him in an altered state due to Hypoglycemic episode.  Gave him Karo and got him to be well enough to drink and eat and slept thru the night.  This morning he was walking into walls and wouldn't eat or drink.  Has an infection, his blood sugar really high and in Kidney failure.  He also has lost his vision.  I discussed with my husband and we believe it is in his best interest (to end his suffering) and he will not have the best quality of life if he even survives the weekend, so will put him down later today.  I am really concerned about my 2 other cats - 1 is his sibling but since he has been sick for the past month she only hisses at him and stays completely away from him.  Out other male cat - he is his playmate.  I have heard that sometimes it helps if you show the remaining pets the other pet after he his been put down - any thoughts?

I am so sorry to hear about your cat, Mikey. How old is he? Perhaps if you get his blood sugar down, he will feel better and will recover his eyesight.

I have also heard that other cats are more likely to accept another's loss if they are able to smell/see them after they have passed. I have no personal experience with this, though, so maybe others who have been through this will offer advice.

Again, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. Have you considered in-home euthanasia? This would be less stressful on Mikey and the other cats would be able to see he has passed.

So sorry to hear about Mikey. It does sound like it may be best for him, but that is a tough decision nonetheless. I know next to nothing on the subject of animal grief, but that does sound like it may help. Instead of him just disappearing, if they smell him, they will understand, I would imagine.

So sorry, again. Glad that Mikey got to spend his life with someone who clearly cares about him a lot.
