It is not unusual moms do bits off the whiskers.  Why Im not sure, I presume it has something to do with making them submit to her will.

But I havent heard they do get red and swollen at this occasion...  So yes, a do worry a little.

I would phone and ask my vet if I had a vet to phone and ask...

Good luck!

Every litter of kittens I have ever had always will have at least one of them with chewed off whiskers, often times the smallest one. The siblings do this, and I would assume the redness/irritated areas are from the kittens sucking on the face as well, also common and usually when they were taken away from nursing on their mom too young.

They grow back, look funny huh?! heehee

Then when they grow back, at first they look short and stubby like someone cut them clean with scissors :)

I had an extremely 'soppy' little girl in last year's litter.  One time I thought there was something wrong with her face, but saw she was sucking her whiskers the way a little girl would suck on the end of her pigtails.  She did manage to chew off half her sisters whiskers on one side of her face.  No wonder Milly used to go find her tiny little box that just fitted her and no-one else to have a peaceful snooze in!  Three rumbustious brothers and a silly little sister will do that to a girl.
