Hi everyone,

My cat, Mojo, appears to have a white/grey lump right in the inner corner of her eye. It's too deep to be able to get it out with regular cleaning, although it doesn't seem to be causing her any discomfort; she is purring away and not squinting or anything. I have no idea what it is and since she's not in pain I'm not sure whether I should be worried or not

I've included some pictures below, apologies that they're not great, Mojo really doesn't like cameras.

Some background info about Mojo:

- She is 10 years old

- Half indoor/half outdoor cat

- Poor immune system due to getting feline herpes at a young age

- Never had any problems with her eyes before

- Her behaviour has been slightly "off" the past couple of days. Difficult to pin down exactly what was wrong, although she did destroy her litter box two nights ago (my god, the smell!!)

Have any of you experienced something similar with your cats? Let me know if there's anything else you need to know.

What a pretty girl! I'd have her to the vet. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks you! :) She's usually not so zoomed in!

My dad wants to have a look at her when he gets home this evening but I think I'll be pushing to bring her to the vet tomorrow. From what I've been reading online it could be nothing or it could be serious and I would rather not take the risk.

When in doubt, take them to the vet. By destroyed her litter box, do you mean tore it apart, or just laid some stinky plonkers?

You said Mojo had feline herpes. Are you giving her l-lysine?

Yeah we're definitely going to take her to the vet.

She tore it apart and laid the stinkiest plonkers ever (according to my dad, I was luckily still asleep at the time).

No she's never been on medication for it, the vet has never prescribed any. She would've gotten it when I was quite young, around 13, so I don't remember all the particulars.

L-lysine is an amino acid that replaces one of the ones that the FHV needs to replicate, resulting in the reduction in number of the viruses. You can get it in paste form (Enisly-F), pure powder form ("Now" brand that Amazon sells), or in the pharmacy department of most big grocery stores, by the supplements and vitamins. I see you are in Ireland, so I don't know exactly where to get it there.

I just looked and Amazon UK ships to Ireland.  The Now brand is so convenient. 1/8 teaspoon twice a day is the recommended dosage. During a flare-up, you can double that with no problems. The 1 pound bottle sold here in the US contains 822 full doses (1/4 teaspoon) and is $16 US.  Check on the Amazon UK site for specific weights and prices for your area.

Oh I hadn't heard of that before. Sounds quite interesting, I'll be sure to look it up.

We've also just made an appointment with the vet for Friday at 5. Ideally it would be tomorrow but no one is free during the vet's opening hours. The vet said since Mojo's not in pain, Friday should be fine.

Update: Mojo is perfectly fine. Whatever was in her eye cleared up 100% overnight (maybe it was some grit that dislodged itself). I have examined her eye thoroughly and there is no trace of anything left. All that worry for nothing!

She also seems much more like her usual self, although we did have another litter box incident last night (will be keeping a close eye on her diet and habits for the next few days to see if this clears up too). In general though she is a lot more lively and willing to enjoy the nice weather compared to the past few days where she just wanted to sleep in her basket all day.
