Recently, my cat's foster mom found out that my cat's mother has a sever case of stomatitis. I took the monster to the vet for his routine health plan check up and the vet saw he's developing a case of gingivitis and recommended using dental wipes. I'm having some difficulty using the dental wipes on him.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for me and getting his to let me use the wipes? I try to give him treats after wards, the dental greenies, but he won't take it from my hand.

I had to look them up. What is it he objects to the most? The taste, smell, or just opening his mouth and using your finger to wipe the teeth?

I'm pretty sure it's the taste. He's gotten better but very slowly, I've gotten one side of his teeth today.

Hope no one minds if I revive/hijack this thread. Any other tips on using dental wipes and acclimatizing cats to dental wipes in a non-stressful way?

My kittens used to be pretty fine with wipes (baby wipes if they got something stuck to them, antibacterial wipes for their nametags because it sometimes drags into their food). I used a dental wipe this morning, and now Artemis shies away from all wipes, and from me after I use them. I tried giving her a treat the second time I used a wipe (the nametag wipe, which she has always been fine with) and I couldn't distract from the wipe with a treat.

I don't know if there is any way to do it, other than starting when they are kittens.

Could it be that your hand still smelled like the dental wipe? Maybe that was why Artemis shied away from you.

Personally, I have to use wipes very rarely, and usually just a bit of TP for klingons.

My cat also refused wiping his teeth, as our vet told us. That cats reluctantly agree to endure in vet's office is one thing, and what they will take at home is completely different thing.

There are different herbal or homeopathic formulations for gums that can be dropped on cat's gums or applied with Q-tip, being careful with touching sensitive gums. I just got Pet Wellbeing's Healthy Gums for Feline Periodontal Health, it helped other cats with stomatitis (don't remember where reviews were - at their website or at amazon), but I can't use it for a some time, until my cat's mouth heals more after oral surgeries, so no personal experience so far. It was not an advanced stomatitis, just vet's suspicion that it was a flare of a mild one. And, because it may have autoimmune origin, immune support drops too.

No affiliation of any kind, I found them by accident in search of solutions and their herbal preparations mostly helped.

Thanks for the tips! I think catspaw66 was right - my kitten originally avoided me because my hands smelled like the dental wipe. I've tried a few more times and we'll see if they get used to it, but if not, the q-tip idea might be my next option!
