I posted about this in my "Need Advice" post, but I figured it would get more notice if I made a thread about it. I'll try to include as much information as possible, but of course it was yesterday and I didn't even think to take pictures because I was getting ready for work and checking everyone over.
Yesterday morning, around 7am Mike, my SO, walked into the bathroom and noticed a rather large, dried puddle of what appeared to be blood. It was bright red, about 6 inches long (maybe a bit smaller) and 3-4 inches wide. There were smaller ~0.5 inch and less droplets around it. It was not smeared, did not appear to be diluted with anything and was opaque. It was pretty bright red, but when wiped up (with a baby wipe) it was darker, like you would expect from blood, however that may also be partially due to dirty floors (I hadn't washed/swept the floor in there for... awhile, lol). The droplets didn't appear to have any movement to them, like you would expect if something was bleeding and walking. The larger pool was more oval shaped, but also didn't have a distinctive "tail" like you would get if something was moving. Nothing was smeared as though something had walked or been dragged through it. I also found a single drop in the spare bedroom where Moww has been spending most of his time.
I checked all animals that I could find (couldn't find one of the cats before I had to leave, but found him later) and there wasn't any evidents of cuts or blood on any of them. I took a baby wipe to everyone's rear and genital areas as well, just incase (Moww, Lloyd and the temporary cat are all dark, 2 black, one tabby). Nothing showed up on the wipes. I can rule the dachshunds out because the blood wasn't there when I went to bed around 1am and they were crated all night. So, that leaves the people (myself and my SO), Bruce (King Shepherd) and the 4 cats. Ruled out myself and Mike, no fresh cuts on either of us and I think we would have noticed if we lost that much blood. I checked Bruce over really well, he has long hair so any blood from him would be pretty noticable, nothing on him. I checked each cat as well, no blood there.
We discussed it, neither of us brought a red drink or anything red upstairs at all the night before. The only red liquid we even have in the house is red Kool-Aid and ketchup, neither of which seem to go with this (Kool-Aid too thin and bright, Ketchup too thick and dark).
Moww was hospitalized for a month with urinary blockages, when he first came in his urine was extremely bloody but even at that point it was not this bright. He also peed in the litterbox when I was home for lunch yesterday and when I dabbed it with toilet paper it was not bloody at all.
My theories:
1) One of the cats caught and killed a mouse or small rat in there (maybe a bat?). No body parts were found, although Bruce would most likely have eaten whatever was left over. However, I also think he would have licked up the blood. I would also assume that there would have been some bloody paw prints or smears from dragging at least - there was nothing. There also seemed to be too much blood for this.
2) Moww was blocked again and passed a stone, leaving a large puddle of blood. There doesn't seem to be enough blood if this was the case, plus no stone found. If it was very small, I may not have noticed it though. However, he wasn't showing any signs of being blocked, I checked his bladder that night before going to bed and it was small - not enough urine to force a stone out if that was the case. There was also no vocalizations and he has used the litterbox normally since, producing normal urine as well.
3) Cat fight and someone got cut. Seems like a lot of blood for me not to have noticed a cut when I was checking them out. We also didn't hear anything overnight and one of us ALWAYS wakes up when there's a cat fight. If there was one bad enough to result in a pool of blood like that, we would have both woken up.
4) Someone vomitted it up. However, there was no evidence of any food or much, if any, dilutent in the pool. I would also assume that something that vomitted it up would not be acting normally now, everyone is.
5) One of the dogs had a tick that detached itself and exploded in the bathroom. Still seems like way too much blood, and again, no evidence of a dead tick or pieces of a tick in the bathroom.
I'm going to look everyone over again tonight and possibly give them all baths (at least the dogs) to see if the water turns reddish at all from anyone. I'm really at a loss and of course now really want to know what it is from!
