My family once had a cat who gave birth to three kittens, the chubbiest one was named Joe and always got a "fat" tagged onto the front because of his greediness drinking his mother's milk.

Since we lived in the country, all of our cats were let outdoors whenever they pleased. Unfortunately, in the wild, pretty little house cats can become predator food pretty quickly, and soon two of the boy cats and the mama cat had disappeared. Fat Joe always made it through though. As he got older he would disappear for long periods of time. We don't know where he went, probably deep into the woods, but he would be gone for a week and be covered with small scraped upon his return. He was a tough guy, for sure. He would hang around the homestead for a few weeks, get some cuddles, eat a lot, heal himself, and then leave us again.

It was spring 2007 or 2008, I can't remember that well, but he was on another one of his week-long absences. None of us worried too much because he always returned so promptly. But on one night, driving home from a school event, my sisters and I spotted him from the car window. He had been hit by a vehicle, we suspect. We collected him up and had a grand backyard burial for the poor guy. The sad part is, he probably would have returned home that night since he was so close.

Rest in peace, Fat Joe. We miss you <3
