When a URI keeps coming back it is usually the feline herpes virus. The antibiotics cure the secondary bacterial infection, which is common for cats with herpes, but it doesn't affect the actual virus causing the infections, so the symptoms keep coming back.

The best treatment for feline herpes is a supplement called l-lysine. It is an amino acid that boost the immune system and interrupts the replication of the herpes virus.

Many people (myself included) use pure l-lysine powder rather than commercial made for cat products. The pure powder is added to the food and mixed in. Most cats tolerate it well because it has no taste except slightly salty. 500 mg a day is the therapeutic dose, which is 1/4 teaspoon of pure powder.

Several companies make l-lysine "treats" and there are pastes and gels available too.

There is no cure, but many cats, once started on l-lysine end up going most of their lives without any more flare-ups, or very few which no longer go into secondary infection (so antibiotics aren't needed any more either)

Be sure to feed your kitten a good quality canned diet to keep him strong and healthy and hydrated, that will help him fight off the flare-ups too.

Just a note. The l-lysine should be given in equal doses 12 hours apart. Mine all get 1/8 tsp.(250mg) of the Now brand twice a day, sprinkled on their wet food.
