Hi,

So my mother cat had 4 kittens about a month ago and I've read that now it the time for them to start eating wet food. I made the mistake of just giving them their mothers food with her, and it didn't go well. They kind of fell asleep and started shaking. I stayed with them and kept them active every now and then to make sure they were ok, and they were fine after like and hour.

Now I'm trying to do it the right way. Obviously I'm going to buy some kitten food this time. Do you have any tips as to how to get them to eat the wet food without their little bodies freaking out?

Please let me know,

Sarah

I have never heard of that happening. Did they get wet while eating or anything? Very odd. You might want to call the vet to ask about that. It sounds like hypoglycemia but there's no reason their blood sugar should have been lower after eating!

Most canned cat foods are suitable for all life stages so it won't make much difference whether the food says it's specifically for kittens or not. What brand/flavor was it? I do like to use Fancy Feast Kitten because it's higher in fat and calories but any pate-type food that says it's for all life stages should be fine.

The brand is IAMs for adults. No I don't think they got wet. Hopefully they won't react badly to the new food.

Just thought I'd let you know how its been going,

I bought kitten food the other day and I tried again at feeding them wet food -- this time made for the proper age -- and it has been going great! At the same time I started training the kittens to use the litter box, always making sure to place them there after waking up or eating so that they get the hint that when they need to "go" they use the box. It's been going pretty smoothly, I was so proud of the first kitten who made a poo in the box -- it was the first really poo of all the kittens too, so it was pretty exciting for me. Also, I'm always sure to have fresh water available for every one as well, and I hope to transition to dry food soon.

Thanks for all the help,

Sarah

Splendid it goes well now. But like Willowy Im surprised over the initial reaction.  What happened there really??   It could be something just with this Iams for adults, but Iams isnt more peculiar than most others brands...

Possibly some sort of a bad batch?.  We had different scandals, feks with bad ingredients imported from China, and destroying a lot of USA brands...  Or some other fault.

They arent supposed to happen, but apparently they do happen now and then.

Orijen for example had a batch send to Australia destroyed at custom a couple of years ago. Over a hundred cats did payed the price thereof in full.  *RIP*

Mom being adult manages here, but apparently not small kittens...

So my recommendation for now, is you abandon this Iams for mom too, and try to seek out some other brand you think should be OK...  Perhaps this you have for your kittens, as you see it is OK.

Good luck!
