Saturday afternoon it started to feel warm and I saw the thermstat read 84. Went outside and the compressor was not turning. We have a service contract, but of course since it's a holiday weekend they can't come until tomorrow. We've been using the ceiling fans which helps a bit, but it's really uncomfortable sleeping at night. Just one more night and they'll be here tomorrow!! They really should consider no air an emergency call, but their emergencies only cover things like an unstoppable water leak, etc. Can't wait to get this fixed --- it's been averaging around 87 degrees in the evening in the house - no fun!!!!

Oh yuck! At least you're on the coast. It gets much worse inland.

If it gets hot in our small apartment this summer 3 fans are going to be on in the frontroom blowing on speed no;3. No A/C downstairs either. I can't open our slide doors to the patio cause there isn't no screen and I don't want our cats to get out.

Oh you poor thing!  It's Murphy's Law that the ac always breaks down when it's hot and humid.  Sleeping under those conditions is almost impossible.  Hopefully, you'll get it fixed soon!

Hope it gets fixed soon! We'll be in the same boat Thursday. It's supposed to reach 90, but we don't have the air conditioners in yet.

AC repairman just left - and we now have air! It was a bad capacitor that had to be replaced. Temp is slowly going down so we can sleep comfortably tonight! Thank goodness!!!!

I turned on the window air conditioner this afternoon, I haven't used the central air yet.  Over this past weekend it was chilly enough that I turned on the heat for a few minutes before I got in the shower.

Oh glad to hear its fixed!!  I was wondering; with the health challenges your husband had, if it could be considered an emergency because of that?

When I lived at home we had central air; but my parents never turned it on.  I got used to sleeping in the heat with a ceiling fan and a small fan on my desk blowing toward my bed.  They were "saving money" they said.  Of course now that everyone is grown they keep the AC on a lot more.
DH always wants ours on.  He doesn't like the house above 78.  I can't really blame him since he works in the heat all day.

I am horrible with ac.  Mom got cold easily so growing up it was set pretty high.  I would have a window unit at the lowest temp blasting from the first heat till october or so.

Now we have 2 window units and it works pretty well for most of the house except the real hot days

I keep my AC at 74-75. . .I would actually prefer 76 because I hate being cold but I need to keep the humidity down or things get moldy. Ick. I hate humidity.

We keep the air at around 78. Last night was the first night we slept comfortably since Saturday. You never realize how much you depend on something until you don't have it anymore!

I'm glad you now have the A/C back, Kookycats! It must be brutal down there without A/C!

Paula Deen, in one of her books, said they did the following when she was a kid--they had no A/C: put a big bowl of ice cubes on a table at the foot of the bed, and place an electric fan behind it.  I've never tried it, but perhaps ths tip will help someone until they get the A/C restored!

Oh I remember doing that in the one house we had with no ac.  It worked.  cats used to then enjoy the water:)  And something I had not thought of in few years-I used to wet a full size towel then wring it best I could and cover myself. It was great after working all day and taking shower and running to room in just that and a fan on me

In the kitchen
We don't have AC; we keep talking about it and a year or so ago, we came "this close" to putting a system in the house. But I keep backing out. And it is me, not Rick. We do have two window units that we use: one in the kitchen window and one in the computer room.

Now that we have the new window in the kitchen, though, we can't put an AC in there, so I don't know where we can put it now. We'll put the other one in the computer room again when the weather gets really hot. But for now, we're doing OK. We keep all the windows open all the time and the air flows through the house fairly well. We keep the ceiling fan on in the kitchen. We have the kitchen door open all the time, too; that is a French door and we have it set up so that both doors open and are screened. It's not that bad in the house......yet!

We're installing a ceiling fan in the bedroom in the next few weeks; I've had the fan for about four years now, but Rick never got around to putting it in. When the electrician comes in to finish the under-cab lighting in the kitchen, he and Rick are going to install the bedroom fan, too. (And the new light for the kitchen ceiling; I bought one, but Rick doesn't want to deal with it.)

People who are used to AC would probably die in our house! But really, it's not that bad.

Mine had the capacitor go out back in February, AND the sequencer. $$$

Then there was wiring in April. $$$

And just this past Wednesday it was the blower motor and fan relay. $$$

Next week they are going to be replacing the whole shebang. $$$$

:thud:

At least they will deduct what we paid so far from the new unit and I have a/c now before it gets humid this weekend.

The time comes when it has to be done. But you'll discover that you will save a lot on your electricity bill each month. When we had the new unit put in (I think it was around 4 years ago), we noticed at east a $50 difference in the bill each month. Eventually it pays for itself.
