So I'm waiting to get my things out of storage and im dreading it haha I know i have loads of things in there that I do not use, so I am going to have to decide what to do with it all.

How often do you de-clutter?

Usually DH can be counted on to throw things out, since he hates clutter. I usually do it once or twice a year.

I'm a terrible packrat. About once or twice a year I throw stuff out, going through stuff now so I feel your pain! It helps to have good music playing while doing this dreaded chore.

every month or so.  I try to throw things out on spot though in general.  Mail gets dumped right away and a hook for water bill stub to pay.  Alot is done online.  When I buy something the packaging goes to garage and I dump it after month unless it is a really pricy item then I hold onto it longer.

I grew up surrounded by clutter and it gives me a headache:S

I like this post

My inlaws and my mom are going through some major life changes.  My mom has decided to move in with my sister and her husband.  No- she's not at that point yet.  My dad's been gone for almost 9 years, and from day one she has NOT liked living alone, managing finances etc, etc.  I worry- but she's ok with it, so I guess I'm ok with it.  She's going from a 1500 square foot apartment to an 800 square foot portion of their home.  She already downsized once, and I got a rug, dishes and her dining room set.  There's more stuff this time.  Dishes, kitchen stuff etc, etc.

And then, my inlaws have decided to put their home of 40 years (a 100 acre farm) on the market.  Part of me worries (another post completely, I don't want to get into it, maybe I will).  But in my heart I know it's a good idea, and it's time.  I'd rather them do it now, when they can make the decision, rather than dh and his brothers having to make the decision for them.  Mil can't drive at night any more.  Fil sometimes has a hard time walking.  It takes him 3 days to mow the yard, and that's with a ride-on lawnmower.  They live 30 minutes away from any family.

I have no idea how big of a home they are looking at, and how much they want to downsize.  They're coming to visit, and bringing 2 cedar chests with them.  No idea where I'm going to put them- but I wasn't going to say no.  When mom downsized, it made it easier to do so when she knew that "stuff" that was important to her was going to go to a good home (like the dining room set)

So what does this have to do with decluttering?  Dh and I have lived in this house for over 20 years.  We. Have. Stuff.  I cleaned out dd's closet b/c she came home from college with a dorm room full of "stuff" that needed a home over the summer.  The kitchen is full of "stuff" that I don't think we've ever used, and my mom's going to come here with half of her "stuff" (it's being divided between me and my sister).  I guess the things that I don't want will find a place in the attic so when my two leave they'll have a little bit of stuff to start an apartment with.

That is my job this summer.  Decluttering the house.

I definitely don't do it enough. Aaron and I have way too much extra stuff around. We're working on getting rid of some. I donated a lot of things last weekend.

A few times a year. I try not to get cluttered in the first place!  I really want to get the attic organized. I was just starting to do so the week before I last hurt my knee. As the attic is more of a crawl-space, I have to sit and/or kneel up there.

I'm just tired of having "stuff".  I tend to keep things pretty un-cluttered, but I still have too much for my liking. A couple of years ago, I realized what material objects are important to me: jewelry and books. That's all I want to make a lot or room for, and even then, I still want to contain the sprawl.

It's hard to de-clutter around here because I'm married to a packrat! That man will keep anything.
I do most of my de-cluttering when he's in Oregon for his week of union stuff. When he's gone, I clean and rip through the house. That's when I clean out closets and re-arrange drawers, things like that.

We really went through the kitchen last year when we packed it up for the kitchen renovation. Got rid of a ton of stuff (and then Mom passed away and I took a lot of her stuff, so I don't know that I really accomplished much of anything!!). We had this junk drawer in the kitchen; Rick wouldn't let me touch it at all (he knows what I'd do, I think), so we put it in a tote last year. Well, it's still in that tote and it will probably stay there for awhile yet. But the tote is in the basement, so it's OK, I guess. Rick will get around to it and get it cleaned out. (He tried to start another junk drawer in the new kitchen and I said, "Ummmmm, no! No junk drawers!"
 Not going there.)

Part of the problem is that our house is small. Really small. And there's not a lot of storage space, so things tend to find their way to the basement. Which is OK, I guess, but then I end up ripping through the basement with the vacuum and totes and such, trying to clean that out. (He is going to Oregon in September for a week; that basement has been calling my name for awhile now.)

Yard sales are wonderful things sometimes. We're planning one at the end of August and another one in October. And we're going to be ruthless! Ruthless, I tell you!! And what doesn't get sold will go either to Goodwill's or to the landfill. RUTHLESS!!!
