What strange household items do your cats decide are the greatest toys ever?

Today when I was washing my face I was using one of those little circular natural sponge type loofahs to exfoliate.  I set it on the sink and accidentally knocked it down & Archer was right there claiming it as his own!  I took it away from him because, although it was rinsed out, I didn't know if there was any soap residue in it still.  He then jumped up onto the toilet & reached over and grabbed it from the sink & took off running!  Sneaky little devil:)  Don't worry, I did get it back from him right away:)

So what weird objects have your cats claimed as their own and decided that they make a great toy?

The little round tab from the top of soy milk cartons. Its a plastic circle with a ring on top. They love to bat these around and toss them up into the air.

They also really like emery boards. If I leave one out it will be gone. I think its the scent because it does kind of smell like cat pee when you file your nails with them, or at least that is what I think it smells like.

Well after reading all of these, at least I know that Archer is in good company thinking everything and anything can be a toy
.   I really enjoy reading all of the different household items that each cat thinks makes the best toy.

Archer and Hugo both love soda bottle caps, so I'd bet that if I still wore contacts that they'd be after the caps to them too!  Or they'd just go for the whole case:)  I can just imagine that, I'd be blindly searching for the case while they sit in the corner and snicker

And emery boards!  I forgot about those!   The last time I gave myself a full manicure Archer kept trying to steal them so that he could sniff at them and even lick them, eww!  I kept having to grab them from him, which of course then made me have to repaint my nails
.  You're probably right and it must be something from the smell.  Though, I always thought the nail dust, when you file them, smells kind of burnt and it is quite strong.

So, yep, definitely if it moves it just has to be a toy!

Holly likes the sunglasses that you can put over your regular glasses after your eyes have been dilated.

She also was walking around with a tag to one of the plants we'd gotten in the front yard.

And the pull tabs to UPS and USPS mailers (the flat envelopes that have papers in them).

Anything can be a toy
We just have to make sure they are "age appropriate"

besides toilet paper Thunder likes to push open the kitchen drawer and get rubber bands, and hair ties.

One of my cats is famous for stealing the tub stopper/plug. We started putting it up high on the little rack thing that hangs from the shower head. So now he stands on 2 feet on the side of the tub and reaches up and pushes on the flexible shower hose to rattle the stopper free from it's rack.

And Rhys likes to go into the bathroom cupboard and steal tampons!!

My cats like the plastic rings around caps, too. Except, I don't like to give them the ones that are real small. They love the blue plastic ring that came off a mayonnaise jar (about 2.5 inches in diameter). They also love beverage straws without the paper wrapper.

Oh, and yes, my cats like rubber bands, too, but they are now banned (no pun intended) from my house after hearing about a cat who had to get surgery from swallowing a rubber band.

Artemis is also a big fan of the plastic rings from the milk jug! She also loves to kick around beer bottle tops and has developed a very strange obsession with tubes of chapstick. She literally plays with them and then stashes them under the couch. For the first few months that I had her I was buying tens of tubes of chapstick every month and couldn't figure out where they were disappearing to. I moved the couch one afternoon while cleaning and found alllllll of my chapstick. My cat is a hoarder.

paper bags are great fun, especially if they are open. the boys like to hide inside and ambush the unsuspecting passer by.

These are all great!  I love how just about anything can be a toy:)

Paper bags are a huge hit here.  They both love to do the hide and ambush thing!  Archer tries to steal my hair ties, but I really try to make sure they're not where he can get to them since I'd be afraid of him swallowing a piece of the elastic (of course first he would have to chew it apart and then chew off the outside lining piece, so I'm probably just paranoid).  Like GoHolistic we also have no rubber bands in the house because I'm afraid of one of them getting one and eating it.

Archer also tries to steal the pen right out of my hand when I'm writing something.  Another thing he loves to steal is my sleep mask which can be annoying when I'm ready for bed and can't find it.  I think he does it on purpose just to see me search for it:)  Oh and Archer and Hugo both love to chew on the bristles on their hair brush.  I guess it feels good on their teeth or gums or something.  Silly boys

SneakyMom - Love the "age appropriate" comment!  You really do need to think of them as toddlers don't you?

Andrya - Archer used to try to steal the rubber stopper from our tub too, and like you we resorted to putting it high up.  We put ours up on the little shelf that's built into the shower for soap bars.  We were lucky that he'd only take it so far as to the hallway outside of the bathroom, so it was at least never lost:)  And your kitty is a lot more determined than Archer to get that favorite toy!  I don't think he even knows it's up there now:)

HeyItsFae - I can just imagine your surprise upon lifting up your couch to find a massive hoard of chapstick!
Does your kitty still try to hoard all of your chapsticks?  So funny!  That would drive me nuts though because I hate it when I can't find my chapstick.

Oh, that's cute:)  I wonder if they like the crinkly feel or something?  Wait, they take turns?  Hehe, Archer & Hugo would just both pile in if they found someplace they wanted to sleep:)  We can't leave those water bottle packages out because Archer tries to chew the plastic!  He's absolutely obsessed with it!

One of Archer's favorite places to lay is on one of those reusable bags that keeps hot food hot and cold food cold.  I think he likes it because it gets all toasty from reflecting his heat back to himself.  And now that Hugo's seen him do it a few times he tries to get on the bag too:)

Where my cats are
My Mom's cat Olivia is very fond of the water packaging too.  She think you can't see her in there.
She loves batting around wads of paper.  She is the quietest cat I've ever met; but she comes running (almost silently) when she hears anyone crinkling paper.
.....They love the blue plastic ring that came off a mayonnaise jar (about 2.5 inches in diameter).
That is a favorite here too.  My DD also uses them as bracelets.  The cats look at her like "you are stealing our toys!."  We have tons of milk rings around here.  My Mom worked in a daycare center for a while and she'd bring me tons of different colored ones. I have a good stockpile put away thanks to that job!!
Silly boys

Tiger; one of my RB girls, would snatch pens right out of my hand if I laid on my bed to do homework and she wanted attention.  She was a polydactyl and would use that thumb to her advantage!!

And yes they are like toddlers!  I find myself scolding my kids and my cats with the exact same words, noises, and techniques even!

My cats both love my blush brush. They think its something amazing. I have to keep it in a drawer or I find that it disappears during the day and ends up in all sorts of locations.

Maybe they want to become make-up artists:)  That can't possibly taste good though with the blush powder on it!  They probably think it looks like a furry little animal since the blush brushes are so big and fluffy normally
