Hello all... I am new to the site... I recently rescued 5 kittens from an old car behind my dads house... So far so good but one of the kittens has not had a poop yet and it's been 2 days... He has a red anus and it is swollen... He is acting normal otherwise eating, drinking, playing etc... I am don't have a lot of knowledge as I am really a dog person but couldn't stand the thought of the abandoned kittens alone or maybe worse so once they are old enough I have homes for all of them but any help would be greatly appreciated:)

If it is red and swollen that is usually a sign that he has had diarrhea. You can get a plastic syringe from the vet to be used for feeding kittens (if you need to do it by force), and look up "kitten glop" on the internet and make some. Put some canned pumpkin in the mix too, to help make the stools bulkier. A/D and I/D are good prescription hills pet foods sold at the vets if you need to get nutrition in them fast (the I/D is to help keep them from diarrhea).

Kittens who do not eat can die really fast, you didn't mention that as an issue. You can tell if they are dehydrated by pinching the fur at the back of their neck. If it goes down fast that is great, if it stays rigid or goes down slow, they are dehydrated and you need to get fluids in them fast.

Some kittens whose immunity is low are more prone to micro-organism parasites (coccidia, giardia, campylobacter) that can keep their digestive systems in a state of diarrhea, you can also add pro-biotic to the kitten glop and that should help too. Many animals carry these in their systems without any problems but again, if immunity is low it can affect the runt of a litter more profoundly.

Metronidazole is also frequently used as it is anti-fungal/anti parasitic, but I don't know what age these kittens are, so I would hold off using that at first.

A big side effect is what you said, the redness and swelling, it can be extremely acutely painful for a kitten. One of my foster kittens had this and she would try and lick her butt to feel better, it would hurt and she would cry and cry :-(. As I said earlier, the most helpful thing I have found since that time is using the canned pumpkin. It is incredible as is the probiotic. You can put coconut oil on the kitten's butt too, just to help it from being raw.

Sorry my thoughts on this thread are jumbled, I am recalling it all, but you get the picture. Good luck and let us know how the kits are doing. You are the best for helping them.
