First off this is my first time posting! I have two cats, brothers and sister. Dakota Mae and Puppet Gabriel. This question is about Puppet.

This morning I noticed that my male cat (about two and half years old) did not finish his breakfast, he eat about half then stopped. This is very abnormal for Puppet normally he inhales is food. This evening when I feed him dinner I noticed that he was eating very slowly and picking up one piece of food at a time to chew. After eating about a third of his meal he stopped. I gave him some soft food thinking it would be easier for him he eat all of it but it took him a long time to finish. I also noticed that he was very lazy today, just sleeping not his usually active self. Being a holiday weekend I will not be able to take him into his vet until Tuesday at the earliest. Do you think I need to take him to an emergency vet or can he wait till Tuesday? I know tooth problems can cause a number of medical issues in cats and don't want to wait to long.

Well, he is still eating his meals, which is good. It is hairball season, which can make them go off food - when mine have hairball issues, this can be one of the symptoms. The other, when the situation is severe (dealing with it right now), is they don't keep food down - throwing up every meal hours after they eat.

Do you have laxatone on hands? I would try giving a dose - a couple of hours from any meal.

An watch him like a hawk this weekend. If he stops eating, and gets worst, then yes - emergency vet.

I usually give it a day watching and nursing before rushing to the vet unless it is a clear emergency. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

Carolina,

Thanks for the advice! Puppet has not been vomiting at all so I am not to worried. He has never had problems with hair balls before (I can only remember him having them once or twice) so I don't think that is the problem. I will keep a close eye on him and wait to see if any other symptoms pop up before taking him to a vet ER.

I agree that right now I wouldn't call this an emergency.  I am actually most concerned about what you said about him acting lethargic.  I'd see how he acts tomorrow- if he stops eating entirely or if he is literally laying there doing nothing and has to be forced to eat even a little, I'd probably take him to the emergency vet.  If he continues on as he is I think you can maybe wait till Tues.  If he worsens I would take him in.

PLEASE make absolutely sure that he is peeing in his normal amounts! I would watch this very carefully, and once you see him going pee, not any way out of the norm, taking the same amt of time, peeing the same amount, then that';s not it and can probably wait until Tuesday unless of course he gets worse.

But if you DO see a difference, he needs to go IMMEDIATELY. This will kill him.

Pretty common for males to get crystals in their urine causing a blockage, but if untreated asap they can die a painful death.

Good luck!
