This is my cat Calvin. He is almost 6 months old and half MaineCoon half Ragdoll. We rescued him and his brother when they were a little over two months.

About a month into having him we noticed little blisters around his mouth. We switched from plastic food bowls to ceramic and stainless and they seemed to disappear. But, that was short-lived, because they reappeared about a week later. We ended up taking him to the vet because this time he had a spot on the center of his lip and his right side - on the lower lips (not actually the gums or skin.. more like the webbing of the sides of his mouth if that makes sense). She gave him a shot of antibiotic's and some steroids to take home. She was stumped - they took scrapings but I guess did not find anything, and the other vet working suggested a gluten allergy. So, we spent about $40 on a bag of gluten/grain free food. After the steroids, however, they reappeared. Even on this food. I switched him over to a raw diet, and this seemed to help. I also applied some diluted Apple Cider Vinegar to the blister-looking areas. Sometimes, too, it seemed like his mouth was just puffy and all you could see are black/pink gums that look swollen.

We still fed his brother the grainfree/glutenfree food since he does not have any issues (so I don't believe whatever this is is contagious at all). Calvin did get into his brothers food at times, and we noticed his mouth getting worse. I tried buying canned food for Calvin with no gluten - grain - or fillers. The ingredients were basically chicken products and some added vitamins. Still did not help, his mouth continued to get worst. So, back to the raw diet. But, I just took this the other day. We had not seen any visible blisters on his mouth, but he still looks puffy. More like a rabbit mouth than a cat. I then checked his mouth and he has some slight red color on the corner of his side.

He is still eating / playing / drinking just fine. We take the cats on walks, so they are never outside without us and he had these issues before he was ever brought outside. However, I did find out that my boyfriend gave him a bunch of treats two days ago (and these are just Whiskrs treats we had from before, so I am sure they are filled with gluten and grain and everything horrible). Do allergic reactions take time to recover from or would they clear after the food causing the allergy is gone?! It's like the sides of his lips are swollen with some blisters. I'm going to start the vinegar up again and wait for his vet trip. But, just wondering if anyone has had similar issues or saw similar marks on their cats mouth?! Any input would be great! We are at a loss if it is an allergy or an illness. Last week he began rubbing the side of his mouth extra hard on us and anything around - also appeared to be black spots and scabs on his skin. He has let up with the rubbing since. The only other symptom he's had associated with this is his sounds a little congested at times.

My understanding is on the food allergies it can take 6 - 12 weeks in order to see whether allergies either clear up or present themselves.  And if you are doing allergy trials, that mean using a single protein, like chicken only, rabbit only, you get the idea.  Of course, it's got to be nutritionally balanced, not just a chicken breast.  But absolutely NO treats, etc.  But, honestly, I've not heard of food allergies (along)  causing blisters

This sounds like it might be Rodent Ulcers (not from Rats, BTW), or even Feline Herpes, although normally you'll see watery eye(s) with Herpes, and/or sneezing.  Here are a couple threads you might find interesting:

Did you Vet mention either of those things?
