My cat Bo was just diagnosed with crystals 5/24/13 and he doesn't seem to like the Urinary So canned food, any ideas how to get him to start eating it as my vet recommends?

You need to call your vet back. There is more than one kind of prescription food that your vet could suggest. I had to try three different ones before I got one my cat would eat. Good luck.

Yes, I agree, as I have been through cystitis w/ Angel 3xs!  We finally had to put him on Rx food too. He seems to like the Purina UR, & does fine w/ it. After being on it for only 3wks, he finally got an "all clear" urinalysis. That was in February. He will have to stay on this food probably for the rest of his life. I hate that it's not as good quality as the food I was feeding him, but it's worth it to keep him healthy, & the Vet bills away!!!

.........even at $40.00 a case!! (A small price to pay, in comparison, believe me, I have a big care credit bill to prove it).

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
The other prescription food is Hill's Pet c/d. This also targets a neutral urine pH.

What kind of crystals did your kitty have? Struvite or oxalate?

My cat eats Purina UR
Does he ever loose interest in it? ......eating the same thing every day?

Angel has a few times. I usually can just sprinkle a little extra nutritional yeast on it, & he will eat it, but a couple of times, I had to add a little

turkey & gravy baby food for him to eat it. (I found a Beech Nut one that's only turkey & gravy. No other ingredients).

I've also bought one can of Before the Grain turkey & added only a teaspoon, or table spoon mixed in w/ his food.

Some people (like me) don't feed the prescription food even though their cat has had a UTI. That doesn't mean I didn't address the issue. I decided that my cat probably got a bladder stone because I was feeding her dry food. So switched to 100% wet food and add water. Since she had a struvite stone, I also add a urine acidifier and test the urine pH a 2-3 days a week. Her last urine test, approximately a month ago (1 year since original UTI diagnosis) was normal.

Yes, he does lose interest in eating the food. Muffin has a lot of other issues going on. He had a history of struvite crystals since he was about two years old. He is fourteen now. Last year he had a primary liver tumor which was removed. A month ago we found out he now has another abdominal mass. He was also diagnosed with thyroid problems and has been taking medicine for that since his surgery last May. So with all he has going on, yes his appetite is not always good. The ver wanted me to try and keep him eating the Purina UR for as long as possible, but it is a problem which seems to be ongoing to gt him to eat his food. However he has not had urinary problems at all in quite a number of years. He has always eaten prescription food since his original diagnosis of crystals. Another thing I believe will help cats with this problem is making sure they are drinking pure water. Our county water was awful. After we installed a Pur Water Filter on the kitchen faucet and only gave this water, he never blocked again.

I'm sorry to hear muffin is going through all of that.
Yes, I have the same filter on my faucet, & have only ever given Angel water from that, so how he got crystals,
.

(Thank God he never blocked!)  I figured It could have been the lesser quality of dry food he was getting before he came to me. (the first 5-6 yrs of his life) Even when I used to feed him some dry too,

it was the Natural Balance Duck & pea. He was a good water drinker then, but sense being on wet only, & adding water to it, he doesn't, because he gets so much in his food. The vet said his water

content was good, higher than most, when she was doing all the test. I still keep fresh water out for him, but have only seen him drink from it once in months.
